1. The Chicago Bulls/Lebron James dynasty seems to be coming to an end. How does that make you feel?
Troy: Well as their crosstown rival, obviously we love to see it. We're hoping to become the city's flagship franchise in the post-Lebron era and we're very excited to keep building over the next few years
Skrouse: Will be glad to see it end. Not quite there yet, we've obviously seen chinks in the armor the last 2 seasons with the Blackhawks and Hawks each adding a trophy to their case, but Tim's 70+ win season in '41 demonstrated he's still a force to be reckoned with.
LeBron is 100% the best player in 5.0 history in my mind. But I will be glad to not see his name in the boxscores vs the Magic very soon.
TimPig: Was this question sent to everyone or just me? LeBron is getting up there but hopefully is still a stud for 3-4 more years. After that, I think I've got a decent enough transition plan in place with CP3 looking like a stud and guys like Jahlil Okafor, Marvin Williams, and Emmanuel Mudiay all being players. Jabari is only 29 and I've got him locked up long-term still, so I think I have 3-4 positions well accounted for over the next few years. I also have 1.3 and 1.9 in the stacked 2045 draft, so I think I should be able to add another solid piece that season.
RW: Elated. Lebron James reminds me of Nick Diaz and the Bankz dynsatys of old.
AndrewLuck: Perfect timing, IMO. The Suns are young and hungry.
Odin: Though the Lebron dynasty may be coming to an end I don't think the Bulls will drop off a tremendous amount. They may not win 7/10 but i expect them to still be extremely competitive, at least until the end of 5.0.
2. Experienced GMs: Give new GMs one piece of advice that you consider invaluable.
New GMs: What do you need advice on the most?
Troy: Probably judging the FA market and how much/how long to offer. Feel like I did a poor job of that in my first offseason
Skrouse: Have fun, don't take this too seriously. Keep that in mind at all times; take risks, celelbrate the go shrug off the bad, let the bullshit go but most of all, have fun.
TimPig: If you have hard cap room and no more real bids to make, re-sign your non-Bird years guys so you can get them up to three Birds, and if they're over three, offer as many as you can a one-year contract worth $6-8m so that you can trade their salary. Things can change quickly in this league and having that tradable salary can come in handy in a lot of different ways.
RW: I don't know if I am a new or experienced GM, both I guess. My best advice would be to listen to nothing I have to say. I have spent 40 some odd season in TMBSL and made the finals once.
AndrewLuck: I feel like I'm sorta in-between these two groups. However, I'd say I still need all the advice I can get. I think the most important thing I should know now is how to get in good with other GMs. I feel like having a good working relationship with everyone can only help things, but I also sense that this group enjoys a little heat to spice things up now and then.
Odin: Don't commit sizeable long term contracts to mid tier players unless you have the bucks to amnesty them with the swiftness. Beyond that, what Tim said is spot on. Having players with bird years is extremely important even if the players themselves aren't particularly useful.
3. Dominique Wilkins: good player or "shit" player?
Troy: I feel like I'm missing an inside joke or something because looking through his stats, he seems like a HOF type player and he is coming off a particularly spectacular season, so I would categorize him as "good"
Skrouse: 'Nique is a good player in my book. Wish I had a chance to snag him from the exploding Amigos but was not online when they went boom.
TimPig: Good player, not great. I do think there are a few players like him - high volume, high rebounding, no defense wings with small forward and shooting guard eligibility. Dominique Wilkins, Purvis Short, Julius Erving, and probably a few more who could fit into that category with upgrades and playing time.
RW: Seems solid to me, maybe some inflated numbers last year but definitely in the good player category.
AndrewLuck: Good.
Odin: Borderline HoF, possibly would get a yes vote from me after 2041 but it would be close. One thing I do know is bk should have traded him back to me.
4. Which 2042 Free Agency signing has confused you the most?
Troy: Probably Patrick Ewing Jr. getting $10M on a one year deal. I feel like that's a little pricy based on his production, but then again I'm mostly talking out of my ass at this point, so I could be wrong.
Skrouse: Unless I missed a massive TC bump, I think Boobie Gibson's. He was sub MLE just a couple seasons ago and is now getting a 5 year deal at 7 mil plus with increases, just a little mind blowing.
TimPig: Boobie Gibson. I'm not sure what Andrewluck saw in Boobie to commit over $8m per year for six years. That's too expensive for a buyout anytime soon, and I don't think anyone will want to take that contract on for at least four seasons. Amnesty is written all over this one.
RW: I'll go with my move of signing Russell Westbrook and Sergio Rodriguez. I really just wanted to sign as many good players as I could and I plan on moving one of them or Reddick and play Rodriguez at SG. It could beckfire and I'm stuck with a bunch of mediocre players.
AndrewLuck: 25 mil for Justin Anderson... it all makes sense now though.
Odin: Lot of head scratchers this time. RW signed a few, Justin Anderson appears to be questionable at best after preseason. This is why being able to amnesty anything that doesn't work out is so important.
5. What are you doing to prepare forY2K Rookie FA?
Troy: Being that I'm still just trying to establish a base level of competency, I am doing absolutely 0 prep for that. Hoping that after one more full season I'll have a handle on everything and can start doing some research into it
Skrouse: Setting up cap space, not much else can be done IMO. Should probably start racking up some bucks too, to keep my scouting options available.
TimPig: Not much. It starts in four seasons and in that time LeBron James, Chris Paul, Marvin Williams, Jahlil Okafor, Emmanuel Mudiay, Chris Bosh, and Frank Brickowski will all have expired. I don't think it'd be wise to bank on a strategy four years out when my team could look so different two seasons from now.
RW: Probably flail, complain and struggle. More of the same for TMBSL. How will amnesties work in the new rookie FA? Isn't Tim or someone with a billion dumpbucks at a huge advantage because he can just amnesty any high profile rook who busts. Has this question already been brought up and my negligence to read the thread is showing highlighting my incompetence as a GM?
AndrewLuck: I will treat it the same as every other FA. Try to sign the dudes who look good, avoid the dudes who seem useless.
Odin: Saving up as many bucks as possible to amnesty everyone except Rondo leading into that first year. Additionally, I'd love another game 7 finals loss to add to my resume.
6. Should Eric allow rookies who are signed in the post-TC signing period to be extended?
Troy: Sure, I'm not against it
Skrouse: For the 5 mil extension sure, but not the normal rookie 3rd year option, that should be draft only. If you want a guy, draft him in the 3rd round or trade for 2nds. They are always there.
TimPig: Sure. Pretty indifferent either way. I was fine with the old MLE/LLE rules where you could extend them no matter when they were signed. I liked that better than this current system, mostly because an extension didn't increase the salary up to $5m.
RW: Not unless they have cap space. Why would we make an exception to post TC signing for rookies. If you want to take the risk pre-TC I'd be okay with it but post-TC you get the benefit of seeing the TC without the risk.
AndrewLuck: Sure. I mean I don't really care either way. So... sure.
Odin: I think I have let my opinion on this be known. Another solution to the problem would be being able to offer mins to rookies with our minor league teams.
7. Is scouting overpriced? Is scouting even useful? Will scouting be more useful with Rookie FA?
Troy: I don't feel qualified to answer this one. I have only had one opportunity to use the scouting tools the league offers and I didn't really understand them at the time or have the funds to use them even if I had understood, so I can't really speak to it.
Skrouse: I think it's ok, we've adjusted penny payouts so you can make enough to cover it. And to some, like former commishes and experts like Tim/JHB/Ward, the info is more valuable because they can translate to stats.
TimPig: No. Yes. The same.
RW: It seems like the biggest usefulness to scouting is uncovering hidden gems. We can surmise the grades and ratings based on profiles. Ie I scouted Larry Nance Sr. His profile stated high jumping. I scouted his inside to see if he was a hidden gem. His inside was B jumping C inside C strength, shocking!
If true potentials were hidden and you could scout the true potential that would be another story. Overall it seems pretty spot on.
AndrewLuck: I think scouting is a bit pricey but, definitely useful. I think it will be critical for rookie FA so I'd like to see maybe a small number of free (and trade-able) private-workouts every year.
Odin: Well, drafting is stupid. Don't do it. Trade those picks for more established players. However, I will likely be scouting far more often during Rookie FA. Well, I'll be doing private workouts at least.
8. If you could have any NBA player join as a GM, who would it be?
Troy: Joel Embiid. He seems like a pretty funny dude
Skrouse: JJ Reddick - Smart but a good dude, won't be too overbearing. Seems like a fun guy to hang out with, doesn't appear to be too high on himself either which is a plus.
TimPig: LeBron James so that he could add TMBSL to his growing empire and turn it into a multi-million dollar operation where GM spots are coveted and pay extremely well.
RW: I thought about this question too much. You could take the easy way out and say Lebron or KD or something. But I'm going full homer, hear me out. Frank Kaminsky. He would hands down take TMBSL super seriously and be an awful GM. He would talk shit and complain then shriek biases because he's in the NBA. There's a solid chance he would rage quit after a trade of his gets vetod.
AndrewLuck: LeBron was my first thought but, I think Dirk would be my pick if retired players are an option.
Odin: Definitely Embiid. He's hilarious and loves drama which is exactly the type of person who excels here.
9. What in the world is BK doing?
Troy: I have no idea. Seems like an odd FA strategy
Skrouse: Having fun! Whatever floats his boat, man. Just don't fuck shit up for the rest of us. Some of the recent moves may not be great for the league, but that is yet to be seen.
TimPig: Pass.
RW: BK seems like an illogical fellow.
AndrewLuck: Building a dynasty, man. You'll see.
Odin: I have written a masterpiece of an article discussing this exact topic. You can find it here: link
10. How do you personally feel about Eric's shout pbp of random playoff games?
Troy:
Skrouse: Great for the league, I love it, especially when it's a big upset. Hope it continues for many seasons, and league iterations, to come
TimPig: Love it. And if Eric enjoys it, he should keep doing it. Being commissioner probably isn't that enjoyable, and if he can find joy in some aspect, he should keep doing it as much as he wants.
RW: I don't pay attention to the playoffs much because the Kings have yet to be a serious contender. I'm a fan though.
AndrewLuck: Eric can shout about whatever he wants. I dig it.
Odin: As someone who never makes the finals, I enjoy it quite a bit but when I do happen to find myself the subject of one of these it is pretty frustrating to not immediately know the result. Keep doing it.
