There has been a lot of talk about how the lottery format in this league lately, and while I personally think the format is perfect. I know a lot of the league is wondering why we went to this unweighted lotto, which in their words is “beyond bill”. Their words, not mine.
So I thought, as a service to the the league we could take a look at what the draft results would have looked like from this current year if we didn’t use, according to a lot of the league this “bill” system. Again, their words not mine. What would be different ? How would the future of these franchises be changed? Well, lets take a look, assuming every team fell into their slot.
1.1 Denver Nuggets: Hakeem Olajuwon.
The nuggets aren’t too mad about getting Jordan in the actual draft, but even the IRL GOAT is a clear drop off from future Sim GOD Hakeem the Dream. The Nuggets don’t have anyone on their team worth a shit currently, but Hakeem is the best building block you could ask for and could probably carry any team into the playoffs.
1.2 Charlotte Hornets: Michael Jordan.
While they were happy to fall to 1.15 and get a future Point Gawd such as Cecil Exum, they would have been equally happy to grab Michael Jordan. The Hornets roster is already loaded with future All Stars such as RJ Barret, Trevon Duval and Austin Wiley. If you add the GOAT to that trio you could pretty much close the eastern conference down for the next 7-8 years. MJ and Barrett would be wreaking havoc on opposing backcourts for generations. MJ was so excited to play for his hometown team that there are rumors that he could quit the Nuggets and focus on baseball.
1.3 Miami Heat: Charles Barkley.
This was IMO a 5 player draft and in the real lotto the Heat fell from 1.3 to 1.6 and selected wild card John Stockton, who should be good, but since this is sim probably wont be. Well, if they had stayed at 1.3 they wouldn’t have had to take a flyer on the Gonzaga legend and could have selected a sure thing in Charles Barkley. The Heat don’t have the deepest roster, but they do have Zion and pairing TRMOR with him would have been a force in the Atlantic. Too bad, because know they just have Zion and still suck.
1.4 Toronto Raptors: Sam Bowie
.
Almost as unlucky as the Hornets the fake IRL Raptors fell from 1.4 down 1.12 and were forced to take Dick Mumma who looks alright but is still a wild card. If they had stayed at 1.4 they could have taken Sam Bowie, who in this current version of sim league has the skills to be an elite big and since this is fake basketball his knees probably wont actually give out. Pairing Bowie Miles Bridges would have given Breax a solid duo to build around. But alas, his team still sucks.
1.5 Washington Bullets: Same Perkins.
We have seen shooting bigs dominate 5.0 so far and pairing Shittu with Perkins would have given the bullets two elite scoring bigs and a great foundation. This is actually a downgrade from the real draft where the Bullets were not only lucky enough to move up a spot, but were equally as lucky that the Bucks took a flyer on Champ Godbolt over SCB.
1.6 Cleveland Cavaliers: Champ Godbolt
.
They didn’t have the worst luck only falling to 1.9 in the actual draft, but if they had stayed at 1.6 they could have gotten player with much more upside than their actual selection Alvin Robertson. Godbolt is a huge prospect with a track record of Odin making him good in 4.0. Alvin Robertson looks very mediocre.
1.7 Utah Jazz: Melvin Turpin
.
The Jazz moved up a couple spots IRL and were able to grab a legit prospect in Sam Bowie. Had the lottery gone according to plan they would have been stuck taking either John Stockon or Melvin Turpin. Stockton has the pedigree, Turpin has the 5.0 skill set. I would envision Ank making the smart pick and taking the big. Lucky for him though, this is just pretend.
1.8 Golden State: Oscar Schmidt.
Taco only moved down a couple of spots and the player he took at 1.10 is still there 1.8. So I guess he would take him. Bad pick, but whatever.
1.9 Los Angeles Lakers: Roosevelt Chapman
.
They could have maybe taken Stockton here, but Chapman looks like the better sim prospect
.
1.10 Chicago Bulls: John Stockton
.
The Bulls were lucky enough to move up to 1.7 and have Sam Perkins fall in their lap. In this scenario they stick at 10 and gamble on name recognition.
1.11 Phoenix Suns: Devin Durrant
.
The luckiest team in the lotto jumped from 1.11 to 1.1 and drafted a franchise changer. In this scenario they are forced to take middling prospect and uncle of Kevin Durrant Devin Durrant. Fuck you Andrew.
1.12 Seattle Supersoncics: Dick Mumma.
Well past the point of any good players the Sonics are forced to bet on a Dick helping them out. Not that Turpin at 1.8 is a sure thing, but his grades look a lot more promising than this guy.
1.13 Lakers Via Celtics: Graylin Werner
.
Already taking a guard at 1.9 the Lakers opt for another big with upside in Graylin Werner. Not too much movement between this and IRL. So no real complaints from Buster.
The Raptors and Hornets got fucked with this lotto and the Suns got incredibly lucky. But, still I think its great.
