5.0’s First to Make HOF
I think in the early stages of iterations of sim league all it should take for the older guys to make the HOF is for them to be truly elite for however long their careers last. In 4.0, Rick Barry made the HOF after only six seasons because he was one of the best SGs in the league and won a few titles.
1. Harry Gallatin
-He’s 31 and one of the best players in the league, probably has at least 2-3 more years of being elite, maybe more if he goes to Germany. He was so amazing last season that I’d vote for him to make the HOF even if he retired this offseason.
2. Jake Shuttlesworth
-Also 31 years old, he’s been one of the best wings in the league these first two seasons. His PPG is a little down this season because of the addition of Jon Pierce, but I think voters will understand that he had to sacrifice some of his own stats for the betterment of the team. I’m intending to send him to Germany if I still have him once he’s 33 to stretch out this level of play as long as I can.
YES, AS A CLIPPER!
3. Neon Boudeaux
-Neon is having the best scoring season that I have ever seen from a big this year (I wasn’t in 2.0 so I can’t comment on the legend of Andrew Bynum). By early 5.0 standards he’s a good rebounder and solid defender. He’s only 30 so he still has some time left, he may not retire until his upcoming max contract expires.
4. Butch McRae
-At 29, Butch is the youngest player that I have listed, he’s quietly one of the ten best players in the league, the best two-way wing and probably the best pure SG overall. I completely get why the software took him 1.1 in the creation draft.
5. DJ Rony
-Rony is the oldest player on the list at 32, If he were in his 20s with a long career ahead of him, I think people would definitely give it to him (similar to Catfish in 4.0). But because we still aren’t entirely sure how to value D/R bigs and since he doesn’t have too much time left, it will be a tossup. I will vote yes if he continues to stay in the top 5 for BPG and shoots this well, that would make him truly elite for an extended period of time.
Potential Finals Matchups
None of these series go past five games
1. Warriors – Sixers-The star-studded dynasty against America's team and the future of the league.
2. Rockets vs Sixers
We need some new blood in the finals. This is the series I most want to see.
3. Warriors – Cavs
-I guess there are some people out there like eric that would like to see this series for the fourth year in a row because of Lebron.
4. Rockets vs Cavs
-Again because of Lebron.
5. Rockets vs Raptors
-Some new blood again, but really I do not want to see the Raptors in finals just because I don’t want to see Drake try to insert himself into the action.
Redrafting 5th Round of Creation Draft
1. Paul Young Thomas (Originally 5.9)
-Yes, I’m going to homer it up on this one, largely because I know that PYT has been a victim of circumstance with his numbers and development. He’s one of the better shot blockers in the league and a good rebounder. He’d be putting up much better scoring numbers if he weren’t the 4th and 5th option these first two years. I’ve also only been able to give +5 because of using upgrades on other players. He could be one of the best second tier bigs in the league.
2. Trenton Watford (Originally 5.10)
-I definitely wouldn’t fault anyone for taking Watford over PYT. Watford is still only 18 and outside of BPG he’s putting up really solid numbers across the board in less than 30 MPG. I’m expecting Watford to look more like a future star once Buster throws the rest of Watford’s upgrades into his inside scoring. In a few years I’ll probably regret not having him 1st.
3. Laurence Jackson (Originally 5.6)
-His numbers are a little down this season but Jackson is still one of those types of players that are useful as a fourth option on a contending team. I remember the Spurs really turning it once MJ made Jackson a scoring option last season. He’s still waiting for his first upgrades.
4. Ed Mikan (Originally 5.3)
-This is where it gwra dicey, but I’d take Mikan 4th because of the defense. He’s averaging 1 SPG and .9 BPG. He could be a pretty good D/R big with properly used upgrades.
5. Nik Richards (Originally 5.1)
-Richards is a decent looking big prospect, he’s averaging about 17 PPG and 9 RPG as a 21-year-old. Shot blocking is almost nonexistent with .2 a game, throw some points into his inside/strength and Breauxcaine could have an offensive force that could eventually average close to 25 PPG.
6. Dwight McGee (Originally 5.2)
-McGee is much better than I was expecting, he’s averaging 15.2 PPG in 21.9 MPG and on good shooting percentages. Rebounding is suspect and he doesn’t play much defense at all. The shot blocking is probably isn't salvageable, but if he had a GM that put +25 into his rebounding and he could be pretty useful as a third big that can score.
7. Halawi Winabi (Originally 5.7)
-Decent option as a backup wing because of the rebounding. Have him at 7 because the players below him are bums.
8. Alredick Hughes (Originally 5.8)
-At first glance I expected I’d have Hughes fourth, but he is actually pretty bad. I see why Delap wanted to get rid of him. A small forward that doesn’t play much defense and can’t shoot threes is a terrible mix. At best, he’s a backup 3 or 4 if you need some inefficient scoring off your bench.
9. Telvin Mack (Originally 5.4)
-I kind of see why Majic was high on Mack after last season, he must have had very low potential or a disastrous TC because he now looks like a broke ass version of last year's Tyler Blevins.
10. Matt Ferrell (Originally 5.5)
GMs Most Likely to Attend Kina's Upcoming Tour
1. Eric – Obvi2. Pete – For Mark David Chapman type of reasons
3. Fecta - IIRC he was a Kinerd even before joining sim league
4. Ankly – Was at Kina’s first stageit show and had people in the chat believing that he was Kina’s agent. He’s contractually obligated to go.
5. Billy – He was at her last online show with Eric.
The Worst Clippers – Kings Trades
-This was an unbelievably horrible trade for Billy, I had no issue and completely understood Odin vetoing it. Up until last sim this pick was looking like it would have been in the lottery in one of the greatest irl drafts of all time, all for a 10k dump bucks which I’m assuming were meant to be used on Brunson’s quickness or Udoka’s jumper.1. The veto’d trade for Orlando’s 02 first
2. The legal trade for Orlando’s 02 first
-At least Billy got an extra 2500 dump bucks and a late first this time. Again, if this pick had stayed in the lotto and jumped to the top 3 or 4 it could have disastrous for the rest of the league from a competitive standpoint had I gotten one of (Hakeem, Barkley, Jordan or Godbolt) and they lived up to expectations. On the other hand, it could have been the tipping point for all the people who hate the unweighted lotto.
3. Juwanna Mann Trade
-Billy fleeced me on this one and as you can see drove a tough bargain.
I gave in on giving up a first because at the time Naar and Heron were killing me with their inefficiency. Didn’t want backup guards to be the potential reason I got knocked out early in the playoffs. And I was having a hard time finding many realistic trade options, figured I could get the same type of production that Mann had given me the year before. I also really didn’t feel like trying to negotiate with Taco for Okobo, where he gets your offer, stalls to take a “closer look”, negs the offer, then asks for your best assets.
Best Long Term Situations
1. Rockets
-I bet some thought I’d pick a current lotto team as number one, but Brain and Beahm are only 26 and 21, and they’re locked up on six-year deals. That could be Pete’s version of Aaron Harrison/Shareef Abdur-Rahim or David Thompson/Larry Kenon to shuffle role players around them for the next sim decade. This is easily the best current long-term situation in the league.
2. Pacers
-I’ve got the Pacers at two for a similar reason to the Rockets, their two best players Taurasi (26) and KBD (25) are locked up for the next four seasons on below market deals. Then they also have the PF or C spot locked up with Donta Hall. This team just needs to find a PG for long term.
3. Jazz
-Gary Bossert is a star, Chuck Person is a really good looking prospect, Jalek Felton could maybe be good with some upgrades, they have cap room to offer a max and they’ve got all of their future picks. Now they just need their GM to start trying.
4. Lakers
-Buster has two good SF prospects with Bias and Watford, it’s a shame though that neither can play SG, one could still be used as a trade asset. He’s got two lotto picks in this draft because of a Celtics pick he acquired during the creation draft. Then he should also have about 20 mil in available cap room to use this offseason, which is the main I have them above the Bulls.
5. Bulls
-This team has a bright future, I just don’t like their future pre2002 lotto as much as the four teams above them. Romeo Langford took a step back this season, but Daugherty and Bamba is really nice young frontcourt duo. Tim also has two lotto picks in this draft because of the Halpert trade. I think they should have the room to make a max offer if they decline the option on Darius Bazley’s deal.
HM. TWolves/Bucks/Mavs
-These three teams have the three best young players in the league (Sexton, Ayton and Reddish), but not too much around them going forward. Bucks could jump to top three if they were to get a top pick in this draft.
Potential Second Round of Amnesties
-I didn’t include any players that are on rookie deals because there are so many that should have their options declined.
1. Jon Pierce 6 years – 131,250,000 Total
-This is a lot of money to give a 32-year-old that just had a decline in their shooting percentage, the main reasons I’d do it is because in a couple seasons I’m going to have to worry about resigning McDermott and PYT, then resigning Rui the following season
2. Sidney Deane 3 years – 30,000,000 Total
-Deane is 33, doesn’t do anything well besides steals. Had Shaun been active last season, I suspect he would have gotten rid of Deane while he had the chance.
3. Carl Braun – 4 years – 40,000,000 Total
-Billy let his pride get in the way and amnestied the wrong and cheaper guard. Timo Cruz isn’t good, but he isn’t as bad as Carl Freaking Braun. Braun doesn’t really do anything well, he’s a below average backup guard.
4. Sim Boyd 4 years – 40,000,000 Total
-Yuck at that contract for a 32-year-old PG that turns it over 4 times a game. The rest of Sim Boyd’s numbers aren't awful for a 5.0 PG, it’s just obvious that he needed points put into his jumper, handles and inside, and one of RV’s Achilles heels is developing players.
5. Slim Charles – 4 years – 32,000,000 Total
-Like Odin, I too would like to know what Taco sees in Slim Charles. He’s a D/R big that doesn’t supply much defense, turns it over nearly 2 times a game, then shot 42.1% and 70.8%. That is a pretty strong case for worst starting big in the league.
Best Signings from 2001 FA
Not counting one year deals or obvious maxes
1. Keita Bates-Diop 6 years – 45,000,000 Total
-This started as a much-maligned deal but is one of the best contracts in the league now that KBD is one of the better all-around small forwards. His rebounding and defense is close to elite. He just needs to improve his shooting percentages to become an elite wing.
2. Jock Landale 3 years – 19,200,000 Total
-This signing could easily be called 1b, Landale has been great for Ward and after some upgrades has jumped up to one of the better second tier bigs in the league. He’s only 25, his rebounding and shot blocking should really improve in these next couple TCs.
3. Rui Hachimura MLE – extended to 3 years -13,500,000 Total
-This was low risk, high reward deal that has really paid off for me. I can’t remember exactly, maybe IanBoyd can help me out, but I think Rui went +5 or +6 this past TC. He’s provided good depth this season as I’ve been trying to develop him to eventually take over for Jake Shuttlesworth.
4. Laurence Jackson 3 years – 15,000,000 Total
-I talked about Jackson earlier in the 5th round redraft portion, this was a really good signing by Buster to get a quality starter on a discount contract.
5. Leonard Leslie 2 years – 17,000,000 Total
-Leslie is in that Landale class of second tier bigs. This was a strong signing by Ian to steal Leslie away from the Rockets and give him a second scorer to compliment Sexton for the last two years of his deal.
Worst Signings from 2001 FA
Not counting one year deals
1. Jon Pierce 6 years – 131,250,000 Total
-I still think Pierce is pretty good, this is just a lot of money to give a 32-year-old. Outside of his shooting percentage, the rest of his numbers are good considering he was benched for the first couple sims and not a scoring option for most of the year, but that dip in his field goal percentage does not make me feel good. I’m sending him to Germany this offseason and adding points to his potential so hopefully can bounce back to shooting close to how he did in 2000.
2. Tobi Oyedeji 2 years – 9,200,000 Total
-I get that Duc was scrambling to find a replacement for Pierce, but Tobi is terrible and giving him a two year deal was a waste of 4.6 mil for this upcoming FA class where nobody has bird rights.
3. Scoonie Saperstein 2 years – 15,120,000 Total
-JHB was in a near identical situation as Duc where he’d just lost Della-Donne and was trying to in this case keep some talent. Scoonie is a good rebounder, that's it, he shots poorly and his defense is nonexistent. I know JHB will have a good bit of cap room this offseason, but it’d be nice to have an 7.9 mil.
4. Spooky Skeleton 2 years – 8,400,000 Total
- I get why Delap offered that deal. If Spooky retires then no big deal, if he doesn’t, then this is a waste of 4.2 mil this offseason.
5. Karim Shabazz 6 years - 75,000,000 Total
- Hey, somebody had to round out the top 5, I don’t think this deal is bad because there aren’t many D/R bigs and Shabazz is one of the best. I offered something similar deal at 4 years/12 mil/no increases. The thing that hurt Heebs with this deal was that Shabazz took the available cap that could have gone to Winters, Withers or Della-Donne.
Worst Decisions
t1. Billy mistakenly putting points into Brunsons quickness
t1. Billy trading two picks for Carl Braun
t1. Billy not using his free amnesty on Carl Braun
t1. Billy overvaluing Udoka because he didn’t realize that on shooting fouls the shot doesn’t count as a field goal attempt
t1. Billy illegally playing Peyton Gragg at SF.
-I don't have the time or words to describe all the moves, individually none of these are probably the worst move, but have to give Billy the top spot due to sheer quantity.
2. JHB taking on and holding onto salary when Elvis was about to be a FA
-I didn't get was doing at all what JHB was doing last season. I kept waiting for him to make a move to shed salary, instead he just kept taking on more and then didn't amnesty Terrence Catchings. I know he thought there was chance that Delle-Donne would accpet his two year max, but we've never seen that offered before and didn't seem worth the risk of relying on.
3. Duc leaving Guy Beahm in G League and not clearing cap to offer Pierce
-Last season was rough for Duc, he didn't seem to make any effort to clear enough cap to offer Pierce a decent contract. Then, he left Beahm in the G-League during an all in season. Beahm could have really helped his playoff chances as a starting SF or back up forward.
4. Delap trading what would become 1.1 for a 6th round creation pick (Salami Brometheus)
-Brometheus is awful and at the time of the this trade Delap wasn't having a strong enough draft to give up your first pick during the first with an unweighted lotto. Lucky for Delap, Cameron Reddish can hide a lot of mistakes.
5. Skrouse trading Gragg and three firsts for GMJ
-Skrouse ended up giving up the better, younger and cheaper player in Gragg along with three firsts for a mediocre GMJ who's contract is expiring this season.
*I didn’t include Fecta’s RJ Barrett pick, because there were a lot of bad creation picks. Also, with how much Barrett improved between years 1 and 2, I think Fecta made the right move to not amnesty him.
