Hello and welcome to our first and likely only amnesty review.
Today we will be discussing each player that was amnestied, looking at how they fared in TC, and commenting on the type of player they were, are, or might become. Finally, we have given an unimpeachably objective letter grade that was based on verifiable analytic data. All complaints about the grading system should be mocked, ridiculed, and not taken seriously.
Enjoy!
Devonte Green - Raptors
Contract - 12.5 for 3.
Draft Grades - C B- C+ C+ C- B
Post TC Grades - C B- C+ C+ C- A (+1 potential)
Currently a FA
Comments - A head scratching pick and a good use of an amnesty. Sucks to waste a creation first, but respect to [insert Raptor's GM] for having the guts to cut bait and move on than to hamstring your roster out of pride. Muzunga
Grade - A+
Isaac Bongo - Jazz
Contract - 8m for 3.
Draft Grades - C+ B B B- C+ B
Post TC Grades - C+ B+ A- B C+ B (+4)
Currently on a minimum as a Hawk.
Comments - Productive young player that looks to have some upside. Was perhaps overpaid a little. I can't fault Ankly for using the amnesty here. He can find a similar player (or probably just sign Bongo) with soft cap space to a better deal.
Grade - C+
Joe Fulks - Grizzlies
Contract - 3.5m for 5 year
Draft Grades - B C C- B B B
Post TC Grades - B+ C C- B+ B+ B (+3)
Currently on an LLE as a Wizard.
Comments - The +3 is fool's gold. Fulks is a terrible player.
Grade - A
Jemerrio Jones - Mavs
Contract - 4.5m for 3 years
Draft Grades - C+ D C+ C A- C
Post TC Grades - C+ D C+ C A- C (no change)
Currently a FA.
Comments - Good amnesty. Not sure why he was drafted tbh.
Grade - B+
Egor Koulechov - Bulls
Contract - 4.5m for 5 years
Draft Grades - C B+ C- C B- C
Post TC Grades - C B+ C- C C+ B (-1, +1 potential)
Currently a FA
Comments - Can't hate the pick, but he probably should have played a little more to see what he's got before using the amnesty.
Grade - B-
Brian Bowen - Hornets
Contract - 8m for 5 years
Draft Grades - C+ B- C- C+ C A
Post TC Grades - C+ B C- C+ C B (+1, -1 potential)
Currently on an LLE with the Wolves
Comments - He's a pretty useless player. While his jumper isn't broke, it would take serious investment in his inside to make him a serviceable wing. There are a lot of options in FA better and much cheaper.
Grade - A-
Ethan Happ - Bucks
Contract - 3.5m for 4 years
Draft Grades - C+ D C+ B- B- B
Post TC Grades - C+ D C B- B C (even)
Currently a FA
Comments - His "even" TC is a little misleading because he got better at rebounding and dropped his handling. Dropping your handling is a good thing as a big, because it means they will turn it over less. That said, Happ's jumper is so broke that he probably isn't more than pinch depth for a playoff team. He can rebound and isn't terrible inefficient though.
Grade - B-
DJ Hogg - Globetrotters
Contract - 10m for 3 years
Draft Grades - C+ B+ B- B- C C
Post TC Grades - C+ B+ B- B C B (+1, +1 potential)
Currently on a minimum with the Grizzlies
Comments - The contract was very bad, so I understand the amnesty. But it looks like Hogg may be a player. He raised his shooting percentages across the board this year and is scoring a lot more buckets per 36. He's worth a look in FA for teams with cap space.
Timo Cruz - Kings
Contract - 8m for 3 years
Draft Grades - B- B+ C+ C+ D B
Post TC Grades - B A- C+ C+ D B (+2)
Currently on a minimum with the Wolves
Comments - Great move with this amnesty as Cruz is a below average scorer who brings absolutely nothing else to the table.
Grade - A
Jim Pollard - Lakers
Contract - 8m for 4 years
Draft Grades - B- B B- C+ B B
Post TC Grades - B- B- B B B B (+2)
Currently on a minimum with the Rockets.
Comments - This is sort of a Pacers buyout because Heebs sent Pollard to the Lakers for a pick and some pennies. Pollard is another decent depth player that was a casualty of creation draft contracts. He is a decent rebounder and has average scoring efficiency. His turnovers are a big issue though.
Grade - B
Tobi Oyedeji - Pacers
Contract - 10m for 5 years
Draft Grades - B+ C- D B B+ C
Post TC Grades - B+ C- D+ B B+ C (+1)
Currently on 4.6m over two year deal with the Sonics
Comments - Not a bad player, but a really bad contract. The Pacers likely suspected that one of the elite bigs of 4.0, who had great overall grades, would be a plus shot blocker and rebounder. He is neither. He has some scoring efficiency, but that's about it. He's overpaid even at 4.6m over 2 years.
Grade - A
Jon Elmore - Trailblazers
Contract - 10m for 4 years
Draft Grades - B- B- B- C+ C+ B
Post TC Grades - B B B+ C+ C C (+3, -1 potential)
Currently on a 6m expiring with the Raptors
Comments - Given how bad the PGs in the league are right now, this is one of the worse amnesty decisions so far. He's not great, and not worth 10m per year in year 1. But given how young he is, I'm not sure amnesty'ing him was the right move for Majic. He was shooting .458/.882/.435 - those are above average for a starting PG in 5.0. Elmore should comment a decent deal in FA.
Grade - C
Dutch Burch - Rockets
Contract - 3.5m for 2 years
Draft Grades - C+ A- B C D+ C
Post TC Grades - C+ A- B C D+ B (+1 potential)
Currently on a 4.2m deal with the Rockets
Comments - Pete amnestied Dutch to make room for Leslie. We get the logic of the move. That said, Burch is a starting caliber PG on a good contract. Pete may have been able to trade him to a team with soft cap space and then amnesty someone else.
Grade - B-
Aaron Holiday - Bullets
Contract - 4.5m for 4 years
Draft Grades - C B+ B- C+ D+ C
Post TC Grades - C B+ B- C D+ C (-1)
Currently on a minimum with the Hornets
Comments - Solid amnesty of a bad player on a cap-eating deal.
Grade - B+
Khyri Thomas - Magic
Contract - 6m for 5 years
Draft Grades - B- B C B- C- C
Post TC Grades - B- B+ C C+ C- B (even, +1 potential)
Currently on a minimum with the Lakers
Comments - He's a fringe depth player that will probably be out of the league in a year or two. Quality amnesty.
Grade - B+
Sim Dump - Wolves
Contract - 10m for 3 years
Draft Grades - B B+ A- C+ D+ D
Post TC Grades - B A- A- C+ D+ C
Currently on a 7m for 2 year deal with the Raptors
Comments - Sexton was the PG of the future in Minnesota, and the amnesty allowed them to land Leslie. Our only thought is that he may have been able to send Dump to a team with soft cap space or get expirings in return.
Grade - B
Juwanna Mann - Clippers
Contract - 6m for 4 years
Draft Grades - B- B+ B- B- C- C
Post TC Grades - B- A- B- C+ C- C (even)
Currently on a minimum with the Clippers
Comments - Solid amnesty, but Mann's redeeming factor is his CG status and ability to play back-up PG. Fason was able to use the soft cap space wisely and wound up getting Mann back in a trade this year.
Grade - B
Cracker McCallahan - Pistons
Contract - 6m for 4 years
Draft Grades - B- D+ C- B+ B B
Post TC Grades - C+ D+ C- A- B C (even, -1 potential)
Currently on an MLE with the Bullets
Comments - Good depth big, but definitely not worth 6m for 4 years. More of an MLE or LLE type player for big man depth.
Grade - B+
Svi Mykhauiliuk - Heat
Contract - 6m for 5 years
Draft Grades - C B+ C+ C+ C- B
Post TC Grades - C A- C C+ C- B (even)
Currently a FA
Comments - His jump shot is horrendous, so the amnesty was completely worth it. That's not even mentioning his Maggette disease. What a terrible, terrible sim ball player. Gross.
Grade - A+
