Pre-Season - Initial Rankings
A smaller batch of rookies this year, but ladder contention looks pretty solid. Top 2 I see in a tier, next 4 I see in the next tier, bottom 2 are alone with the HMs in that tier.
1. Andrew Toney - Chicago Stags
4th in P/TSA, 1st in scoring, turnovers aren't a deal breaker. He's all offense, all the time. Defense is nothing special at all.
2. Kevin McHale - Dallas Mavericks 2nd in P/TSA, 3rd in scoring, 3rd in rebounding, 2nd in stocks, 3rd in blocks. Neck and neck with Toney for #1.
3. Rick Mahorn - Chicago Stags 2nd in scoring, efficient, and super low in TOs. Pump that shot blocking and he should be great.
4. Lorenzo Romar - Atlanta Hawks 3rd in P/TSA, fantastic A:TO for a rookie. If he can replicate this over a bigger sample he has the best shot of challenging Toney/McHale for #1.
5. Jeff Ruland - Orlando Magic 2nd in rebounding, very efficient... but TOs are gonna keep him down. He has to get those under control. Otherwise he looks pretty darn solid.
6. Mike Gminski - Charlotte Bobcats All-around great traditional stats, nothing super elite (except stocks), but nothing bad. Efficiency really needs to improve, though.
7. Joe Barry Carroll - Chicago Bulls Outstanding defensive numbers, fairly efficient... but rebounding looks terrible.
8. Kiki Vandeweghe - Charlotte Bobcats 1st in P/TSA... but thats' about it. Nothing else looks super promising or terrible.
Honorable Mentions:
Points: Carl Nicks - Tri-Cities Blackhawks
Wings: Don Collins - Portland Trail Blazers Darrell Griffith - Charlotte Bobcats
Bigs: James Ray - Charlotte Bobcats Kurt Rambis - Phoenix Suns

Day 401. Kevin McHale - Dallas Mavericks (previous: 2)2nd in P/TSA, 1st in Blocks, 1st in Stocks, a strong rebounder and low TO player to boot. 2. Rick Mahorn - Chicago Stags (previous: 3)6th in P/TSA, 3rd in rebounding, 3rd in Stocks. Low TOs. 3. Andrew Toney - Chicago Stags (previous: 1)Robust scorer with low TOs. Rebounding is decent for a SG, but defense is pretty bad. 4. Jeff Ruland - Orland Magic (previous: 5)1st in scoring and rebounding, very good P/TSA and defensive stats... bad TOs. He would look elite if he can cut his TOs by 1 per 36. 5. Larry Drew - Detroit Pistons (previous: NR)3rd in P/TSA, fantastic A:TO. Could be an amazing no-shoot PG in the future. 6. Ronnie Lester - Denver Nuggets (previous: NR)A lot like drew, but not quite as careful with the ball... but a slightly more voluminous scorer. 7. Darrell Griffith - Charlotte Bobcats (previous: HM)1st in P/TSA, 2nd in scoring... TOs are just abysmal though. Same deal as Ruland... could be elite with much lower TOs. 8. Kurt Rambis - Phoenix Suns (previous: HM)I guess? 2nd in rebounding and stocks, but not terribly efficient (but not unplayable) and a little loose with the rock. Honorable Mentions:
Points: Kelvin Ransey - Syracuse Nationals
Wings: Kenny Natt - Indiana Pacers Chad Kinch - Grand Rapids Drive Mike O'Koren - Washington Bullets
Bigs: None

Day 90No changes in who the Top 8 are, but some shifts in the order. 1. Jeff Ruland - Orlando Magic (previous: 4)TOs have been cut by .4/36 since the last update and he's still dominant in lots of other areas. 3rd in scoring, 4th in P/TSA, 1st in rebounding by a mile (elite elite per36 boards), and 1st in blocks by a solid margin. If he plays any better his GM will trade him next year! 2. Andrew Toney - Chicago Stags (previous: 3)1st in P/TSA, 2nd in scoring. Still isn't really good at much else, but the offensive firepower overwhelms for him. 3. Kevin McHale - Dallas Mavericks (previous: 1)Holds off Mahorn by virtue of his defensive prowess. 2nd in blocks, 1st in stocks, and 5th in P/TSA to boot. 4. Rick Mahorn - Chicago Stags (previous: 2)Scoring, rebounding, and defending incredibly well across the board. Mahorn is really well rounded. 5. Larry Drew - Detroit Pistons (previous: 5)The last of the top tier in this class, Drew looks like the consummate team-first PG. 3rd in P/TSA and an elite A:TO. 6. Darrell Griffith - Charlotte Bobcats (previous: 7)2nd in P/TSA and a good scoring volume, but like Toney, not great at anything else... unlike Toney, he likes to turn it over. 7. Ronnie Lester - Denver Nuggets (previous: 6)The Dollar Store version of Larry Drew... but still playable and should be a top target in FA for a GM with an eye toward future development. 8. Kurt Rambis - Phoenix Suns (previous: 8)Strong D/R big, lousy efficiency. Honorable Mentions:
Points: Kelvin Ransey - Syracuse Nationals
Wings: Kiki Vandeweghe - Charlotte Bobcats Chad Kinch - Grand Rapids Drive Hawkeye Whitney - Seattle SuperSonics
Bigs: Terry Stotts - Seattle SuperSonics

Day 120 - Final UpdateThis is one of the harder delineations I've had to make in the short history of the rookie ladder. The Top 4 all have very solid cases for the crown. Larry Drew is clearly #5 and well ahead of the next few. Congrats me, though, because while McHale hasn't gotten the minutes of Ruland, Toney, or Mahorn, he is the most efficient and looks like he could grow into a defensive monster. No need to transfer winnings this year. 1. Kevin McHale - Dallas Mavericks (previous: 3)1st in P/TSA, 2nd in steals, 2nd in blocks, 1st in stocks, 3rd in boards. 2. Jeff Ruland - Orlando Magic (previous: 1)Just a monster on the boards, averaging 15 per 36. 1st in blocks, 5th in P/TSA. TOs and FT% are what knock him slightly below McHale in this final ranking. 3. Rick Mahorn - Chicago Stags (previous: 4)Just behind Ruland in most categories, but takes better care of the ball. If he gets his blocks up he'll be a MAX player at the end of his rookie deal. 4. Andrew Toney - Chicago Stags (previous: 2)Microwave scorer, but not a lot else. 4th in P/TSA, 2nd in scoring. 5. Larry Drew - Detroit Pistons (previous: 5)A fantastic PG prospect, but unlikely to ever be the best player on a contender. He's the perfect supporting piece. 2nd in P/TSA, A:TO is elite. 6. Kelvin Ransey - Syracuse Nationals (previous: HM)A worse version of Larry Drew, but still looks like a very solid PG prospect going forward. On the plus side, he's a good scorer. 7. Darrell Griffith - Charlotte Bobcats (previous: 6)3rd in P/TSA, lots of scoring... but also lots of TOs. If he can grow out of that he'll be one of the better SGs in the league. 8. Kiki Vandeweghe - Charlotte Bobcats (previous: HM)All-offense, low TO big wing. Doesn't do much else. Honorable Mentions:
Points: Ronnie Lester - Denver Nuggets Carl Nicks - Seattle SuperSonics
Wings: Hawkeye Whitney - Seattle SuperSonics Chad Kinch - Grand Rapids Drive
Bigs: Kurt Nimphius - Sacramento Kings Terry Stotts - Seattle SuperSonics Kurt Rambis - Phoenix Suns
