Hey all,
We've discussed in the rookie FA thread trading upgrade points. Well, the time for it is now. This is because we have stopped receiving new draft picks each season for the new rookie classes.
The idea is that we are able to trade our 40 team upgrade points each season.
Trades would look like this: Lab Upgrades would now look like this:
Whether we want to be able to trade upgrade points for just the current season, or also future seasons (up to 4 seasons in future like draft picks) is part of the poll. In the scenario of trading future year upgrade points, you'd only be able to use upgrade points traded from 2047 in year 2047. So you couldn't trade for all 160 of someone's upgrade points and use them all immediately.
Cheers.

I don't love it but for now I voted yes for up to 4 seasons out. I think this is possibly the best alternative we've come up with for draft picks (outside of removing salary restrictions on trades IMO which would allow us to trade cap space directly). I think scout tokens are basically just trading bucks, so not really the same thing. This would at least be a limited commodity per GM (like cap space).
We definitely need something with value that has limited availability per GM to replace picks. The thing this is missing is having any tie to acquiring players (again, unlike cap space which is needed to make offers to rookies in FA). I'm worried that GMs who hardly use upgrades will basically become farm systems for the well off GMs. A GM like Tim, who has plenty of bucks from all of his activity and duties on the board would benefit from this more than someone like myself who has few duties and maintains just enough bucks to make all necessary purchases.
I think there are some interesting quirks here though, as points would expire at season's end, and points acquired for future years couldn't be used until that year came about.
I would still like to come up with some other alternative that is both tied to acquiring players and limited seasonally to each GM regardless of W/L record or bucks availability.

with the vote split between current season only and 4 years out, let's have a discussion of the pros and cons between the two and why you voted the way you did

if this is implemented it will definitely be limited, teams will only be able to give away and acquire a much lower value than 40 for any given season
also, i want to give you props for your wild optimism that people would actually link to a trade in an upgrade post

I voted yes up to 4 seasons out because if the aim is to replace picks as a trading asset and future picks have been traded regularly in the past, I see no reason why this should be treated any differently. If this has been covered I missed it, but is there an idea on how much over the +40 annual cap on upgrades would be allowed? Say a GM trades for 120 upgrade points in a specific year, does he get to use all 120? I feel like we'd have people trading off all their good players for upgrade points and then waiting for a good rookie FA and offering maxes to everyone, only to turn around and max upgrade all of them. Just a thought.
Also, should mention that I like setting up a scouting token system and making those tradeable better if it comes down to one or the other, but I think this could also work.

bump ericwhats your plan here? I think "yes" is overwhelming, however you want to implement it seems appropriate to me

bump ericwhats your plan here? I think "yes" is overwhelming, however you want to implement it seems appropriate to me my plan is to wait for rookie fa proper to start so we can evaluate the trade market, and if there is a slowdown in player trades we will experiment with alternatives like (a limited version of) this and scout shillings and i think there was another one but i don't remember it right now

Makes sense, we're taking away free assets and not replacing them, spending should decrease.
