A look at what each team misses most from their roster last season, where they went, and why they miss them on the sim floor.
Atlanta Hawks
Who do they miss? Dwyane Wade / SG
What happened? Rode off into retirement sunset with a championship ring
Why do they miss him? Hawks made a significant wing upgrade from Richmond/Beasley to English/Dantley. And while Rodney Carney has provided a lockdown 3rd wing, there are times when Wade's efficiency off the bench last year has been missed.
Charlotte Bobcats
Who do they miss? Dominique Wilkins / SF
What happened? Traded to Amigos (now on Spurs)
Why do they miss him? At a league best 42-7, certainly a case can be argued that they don't. Come playoff (or injury to Short or Embiid) time however, there may be a point where the Bobs could use the offensive punch provided by the leagues third leading scorer.
Charlotte Hornets
Who do they miss? Dante Exum / PG
What happened? Signed with Spurs during FA
Why do they miss him? Monta Ellis' dreadful backup ball handling - Exum currently holds an 11.2/2.4 assist to TO ratio per 36. Monta sports a 7.3/3.9
Harlem Globetrotters
Who do they miss? Chris-Douglas Roberts / SG
What happened? Signed with Mavs during FA
Why do they miss him? An underrated glue guy, CDR currently ranks 9th in steals per 36. The Globes current 4th wing is Michael Finley who just sorta stands out of the way of the other guys on the floor.
Miami Heat
Who do they miss? Tyus Jones / PG
What happened? Selected by Stags in expansion draft
Why do they miss him? Another case of dreadful backup PG play. Goran Dragic & Rod Strickland currently post a PTS/TSA of under .900 while Jones is putting up a steady 9/2 assist to TO ratio and 1.03 PTS/TSA for the Stags.
Orlando Magic
Who do they miss? Tiny Archibald / PG
What happened? Traded to Bullets
Why do they miss him? I'm starting to sense a theme here on the importance of backup PGs. Damon Stoudamire AST/TO ratio: 7.6 to 4.6....Tiny Archibald last season: 9.8 to 1.3
Chicago Stags
Who do they miss? Rudy Gay / SF
What happened? Signed with Blazers during FA
Why do they miss him? The much-maligned former #1 pick has managed to become a decently efficient bench player. Rookie Elston Turner has struggled in the same role for the Stags this season.
Detroit Pistons
Who do they miss? Damion Lee / SG
What happened? Not re-signed, currently a FA
Why do they miss him? Beloved GM Mike has been scarce lately and currently sports only 3 wings on his roster - Dr J, Jim Paxson, & Latrell Sprewell. The latter two have been awful this season while the currently unsigned Lee put up a much better line last season of .456 /.893 /.379/1.078
Washington Bullets
Who do they miss? Brook Lopez / C
What happened? Signed with Mavs during FA
Why do they miss him? Currently the league leader in PER & 2nd in pts/36
Vancouver Grizzlies
Who do they miss? James Worthy / SF
What happened? Traded to Mavs (currently on Bobcats)
Why do the miss him? While rookie Mark Aguirre has performed decently enough thus far, he lack the offensive efficiency at this point in his development to make up for the loss of Worthy of a sometimes offensively challenged Grizz squad.
Chicago Bulls
Who do they miss? Rik Smits / C
What happened? Traded to Mavs (currently on Hawks)
Why do they miss him? While young Marvin Williams has shown flashes, it's difficult to match the hyper efficiency of Smits, currently leading the league in PTS/TSA at age 35.
San Antonio Spurs
Who do they miss? Dan Issel / PF
What happened? Traded to Amigos
Why do they miss him? Trading Issel returned Dominique so the effect is largely negligible, especially with Jokic/Asik/Clemon anchoring the Spurs frontline.
Anaheim Amigos
Who do the miss? Adrian Dantley / SF
What happened? Traded to Hawks
Why do they miss him? Both Dantley & Joel Embiid were casualties of BK's firesale but while Issel and Cartwright have been able to replace Embiid's production, no other wing on the Amigos is currently cracking 8 ppg.
Portland TrailBlazers
Who do they miss? Andrew Wiggins / SF
What happened? Signed by Mavs during FA
Why do they miss him? The Blazers replaced Wiggins with a younger, better defensive version in Jimmy King but Wiggins still remains arguably slightly more efficient in a single years viewing.
Seattle SuperSonics
Who do they miss? James Donaldson / C
What happened? Signed by Suns during FA
Why do they miss him? The Sonics were left with a pretty big hole in the middle after the departure of the efficient Donaldson - currently being replaced by the trio of Robert Parish, Alexander Johnson, & Tom Chambers.
Sacramento Kings
Who do they miss? Kyle Macy / PG
What happened? Signed by Sonics during FA
Why do they miss him? Back to the 2nd string PG issue. Russell Westbrook hasn't developed while Macy has thrived as a starter with the Sonics this season: 17.2 2.7 9.3 1.5 0.2 2.2 .486 .808 .414 1.123 17.3
Phoenix Suns
Who do they miss? Carmelo Anthony / SF
What happened? Retired
Why do they miss him? The Suns signed Michael Beasley as their starting SF of the future, but sliding Danny Granger into the backup role hasn't produced to the level of what they received from the aging Melo last season.
Dallas Mavericks
Who do they miss? Buddy Hield / SG
What happened? Selected by Stags in expansion draft
Why do they miss him? They probably don't. High salary off the books & Buddy has slid back on the efficiency this year. If it does return to previous years & Ro Blackman's volume doesn't increase then the hindsight on this may change.
