let's break out my first article in approximately 7 years on a little mock draft -
1.1 Portland TrailBlazers - Patrick Ewing / Center (Georgetown)
With the first of two picks at the top of the draft, POR goes with perhaps the most accomplished defensive center to come out of college basketball since TMBSL wasted legend Bill Russell. GM majic will look to pair Ewing with an emerging 20 year old Andrew Bynum to anchor a Twin Towers lineup in the Rose City for the next decade.
1.2 Portland TrailBlazers - Chris Mullin / Small Forward (St. John's)
Having shored up their frontline, POR passes on the potential of the stout Karol Malone & instead looks to create a potentially lethal wing shooting combination by adding the sweet, sim ready stroke of Mullin to the explosive scoring ability of Pistol Pete. The defense may be lacking from that duo but it seems majic will likely extend 25 year old Jimmy King as a super wing backup to help pick up the slack on that end of the court.
1.3 Dallas Mavericks - Terry Porter / Point Guard (Wisconsin-Stevens Point)
The point from The Point, this fast rising prospect is flying up the draft boards in a PG starved sim league. GM delap will have a tough choice to make with Malone still on the board but having a Mailman clone in Montrezl Harrell convinces the Mavs GM to go with the score first, elite defending PG in hopes of recreating the Kyrie Irving glory days in the Big D.
1.4 Miami Heat - Karl Malone / Power Forward (La Tech)
Hide the women and high school girls, the Mailman is set to fall into the lap of GM kujo and the already degenerate populace of Miami with pick 4. The muscle bound Malone may just have the most potential of all the prospects in this draft which makes this an ideal landing spot for a franchise without any true young building blocks and in need of a lot in the long run.
1.5 Charlotte Hornets - Benoit Benjamin / Center (Creighton)
Fecta rolls the dice on the potential elite D/R combination of Benjamin with this pick. Assuming PG Dennis Johnson is brought back and Lou Williams continues his dynamic development (not to mention Handsome Man Reggie Theus), CHA looks to have the making of an elite scoring backcourt for the next handful of years. Locking down the inside with a beast like Benjamin to man the middle without being asked to do more than he can handle offensively seems like the right play here.
1.6 Washington Bullets - Wayman Tisdale / Power Forward (Oklahoma)
Unfortunately the Jazz are no longer a GM run outfit in sim league, as that would seem the appropriate squad for the noted bass player to ply his offensive wares. Wayman looks as if he'll be able to step right in and average an easy 20/10 straight away. If GM kn decides to develop his defensive game at some point we could be looking at a steal with this pick.
1.7 Harlem Globetrotters - Xavier McDaniel / Small Forward (Wichita St)
The Globes are noted for liking their wings who do the dirty work without getting the glory so a SF who led the NCAA in rebounding in right up the alley for the Harlem franchise.
1.8 Dallas Mavericks - Detlef Schrempf / Small Forward (Washington)
Detlef goes to the same franchise with the same pick that drafted him IRL , delap's rebuilding project pairs the efficient German (Department of Redundancy Department) scorer with a nice young core of Harrell, Porter, and last years first pick, Rolando Blackman.
1.9 San Antonio Spurs - Joe Dumars / Shooting Guard (McNeese St)
A year after selecting Isiah Thomas, the Spurs opt for his real time Bad Boys backcourt mate and the lockdown defensive wizardry of Joe Dumars. The Spurs have a nice rotation of late 20s bigs to work with as well as a budding star in Jamal Murray. The question here is who is the odd man out if Dumars is the pick. Perhaps a full time move of Murray back to PG and a deal to send Isiah to a team more in rebuilding mode might be in the offing.
1.10 Charlotte Hornets - Michael Adams / Point Guard (Boston College)
The first non-profile player goes off the board with the might mite PG from BC. A gunner from the jump, Adams looks to be groomed as a long term replacement for the 32 year old Denis Johnson in the Hornets already perimeter heavy offense.
1.11 Chicago Stags - Charles Oakley / Power Forward (Virginia Union)
What do you get the team that needs almost everything? The man who collects almost every board. Would be a nice young foundation to go with Turiaf for the new Stags franchise.
1.12 Portland TrailBlazers - Manute Bol / Center (Bridgeport)
The Blazers use their third pick of this draft to fill the third big hole on their roster with the shot blocking phenom from Sudan. If Bol can turn into a Clint Capela-lite off the bench to go with the Ewing/Bynum duo, majic will have himself a stew going.
1.13 Chicago Bulls - Mario Elie / Shooting Guard (American International)
Tim loves to take guys who are high on potential and at pick 13 this is a nice spot for a wing like Elie. A scrappy, hard nosed defender in the mold of a poor man's Michael Cooper would be just what the Bulls GM would be looking for here.
1.14 Phoenix Suns - Alfredick Hughes / Shooting Guard (Loyola IL)
4.0 scoring legend. Pump some scoring points into him and get outta the way.
1.15 Sacramento Kings - Jon Koncak / Center (SMU)
Warning: We have no entered the boring white stiff portion of the draft. Koncack looks to be potentially the best of the bunch of these guys and hopefully can at the least give GM rw some solid defensive production.
1.16 Seattle SuperSonics - Delaney Rudd / Point Guard (Wake Forest)
Another noted 4.0'er, Rudd goes to a Sonics team in need of developing a young playmaker at the point.
1.17 Chicago Bulls - Jerry Reynolds / Small Forward (LSU)
Tim takes "Ice" and doubles up on the wings who do the dirty work. At 6'8'' with a listed strength of steals, Reynolds would fill the backup SG/SF role nicely.
1.18 San Antonio Spurs - Gerald Wilkins / Small Forward (UT Chattanooga)
With the final pick of the first round, GM pointyegg takes a flyer on the athletic younger brother of Dominique and spend a few years learning under big brother before hopefully taking over his starting spot.
