I, AndyLuck- GM of the Phoenix Suns, am tired of the DISRESPECT around here.
Recently, I've been hearing a lot of Pods where folks want to "take a seat with KB" and rank the league's GMs. Now, I agree with the general consensus.. Ward is great. Ross is top tier. Tim is up there too. But... but .. but... not once did I hear AndyLuck mentioned as even a dark horse GM. THE AUDACITY. To remind you all of my 1 time greatness, I'd like to take a look back at the 07 Suns.
Starting line up:
PG- Max Zaslofsky (Hall of Fame)
SG- Butch McRae (Snubbed from Hall of Fame, but best defensive wing ever?)
SF- Qyntell Woods (Hall of Fame)
PF- Stephon Templeton (Hall of Fame)
C - Hakeem Olajuwan (Hall of Fame)
How many teams have had Hall of Fame level players at every starting position? I don't know, I didn't do the research. The point is, this team was one of the greatest of all time. Built by Luck.
Let's take a look at how this team actually came together.. Zaslofsky was a Phoenix OG. Drafted in the creation draft, he was pretty much the only thing on that team worth bragging about. The Suns went 29-53 and then drafted a not good at all Dell Curry in the first round of the following rookie draft. 1 year later, the Suns go 36-46 and LUCKily win the lotto- securing the rights to draft Hakeem 1st overall. Butch McRae signed a max contract with the Suns that off-season. All of a sudden, the greatest big 3 in the history of the organization was born. In 2002, the Suns won 62 games in the regular season but, crumbled in the Western Conference Finals.
A very disappointing 2003 saw the Suns go 49-33, forcing Luck to get more aggressive in the trade market. Insert Stephon Templeton trade here. The Suns added to their collection of great players but, they still could not obtain that elusive championship. Prior to the 2006 season Luck drafts sleeper legend Qyntell Woods late in the first round and FINALLY adds the missing piece. In 2007 after a 54-28 regular season, the Suns dominate the playoffs and finally obtain championship glory for the first time ever. What a glorious run. It is also worth noting that the Suns won 62 games again in 2008, although their bid to go back to back would ultimately fail.
The point is this: the early Suns were amazing. AndrewLuck is the master of the slow-burn. Don't count out another run here soon...
