I picked Odds, Tim picked evens.
1. Chicago Bulls - Chris Paul
Breakdown: The clear 1.1 and the reason Tim didn’t kill himself when Butch Lee signed with the Mavericks. He should be able to come in right away and be one of the best PGs in the league and the Bulls will continue to be good. Sucks. If we can prove that Tim was the one that killed his grandpa maybe he will boycott playing here.
Predicted Grades: B- B- B+ B- C-
2. Orlando Magic (from Vancouver) - Marvin Williams
Breakdown: Marvin has a very sexy write-up as it is, combined with high potential and, at only 19, can grow another inch, making him a solid 6’10, 230. He looks like he’d be an incredible small forward, but I still think he has the build that should make him an excellent big. He’ll have a very solid jumper and there’s nothing in his profile about turnover issues, so he’s a clear +25 candidate. DeAndre Jordan and Antonio McDyess are question marks at this point, but if one can turn out alongside Jordan, Orlando will have a dynamic young frontcourt for a long time.
Predicted Grades: B- B- C C C+
3. Chicago Bulls (from Dallas) - Andrew Bynum
Breakdown: Only 18 years old and has a write up that makes it seem like he will be a contributor on offense and defense right away with great physical attributes and a solid offensive game. Only weakness seems to be poor free throw shooting which will definitely limit his superstar upside, but he seems like an all star player.
Predicted Grades: B D- C- B+ C+
4. Tri-Cities Blackhawks (from Miami) - David Lee
Breakdown: Lee’s profile is iffy, but there are some major strengths that I can see and BK has said in Shout that he looks like one of the top guys available at 1.4. This team has been looking for help next to Embiid up front, and Lee looks like the type of guy who could be a very good scorer and average rebounder. He’ll be worth a scout though, as the high passing could mean a lot of turnovers.
Predicted Grades: B+ C B C+ C
5. Phoenix Suns - Andrew Bogut
Breakdown: The definition of a high floor low ceiling player. Will come in right away and be a productive offensive player who shoots well from the line, get easy buckets and make good decisions. He isn’t the best athlete which will limit his upside, but a safe pick here for Andrew Luck. There are also question marks about his rebounding since that isnt mentioned in his profile.
Predicted Grades: B C C B-
6. Charlotte Hornets (from Harlem) - Danny Granger
Breakdown: Fecta said in an earlier trade block that he’s looking for young big help, but I just don’t see a big here that’s worth the sixth overall pick. His wings right now are Reggie Theus and Jaylen Brown, both of whom I think would make good shooting guards but not very good small forward, in large part due to the lack of rebounding. Granger would come in and give this team a solid set of perimeter players alongside Dennis Johnson and Theus. It’d also open up the opportunity for him to trade Jaylen Brown for picks or help up front if he can find someone who believes in him.
Predicted Grades: B- C+ C- B C
7. San Antonio Spurs - Lou Williams
Breakdown: We are in a 6 player draft and the Spurs are picking 7 so the sure things become less and less. Lou Williams is the pick here as he has a ton of upside, can shoot and score with the best of them. However, when reciting the alphabet he skips the letter D out of principal because he hates and never tries. Getting an elite scorer at 7 is ok though.
Predicted Grades: B- B- C D D
8. Dallas Mavericks (from Atlanta) - Von Wafer
Breakdown: The Mavs’ biggest weaknesses are at center and shooting guard, and there’s not a center worth taking here. A former Seminole with high potential, Wafer would be a good fit in Pittsburgh for a couple of seasons, hopefully have two or three solid TCs, and then be ready to make the jump. One thing that’s tough for Delap is that between Butch Lee, Larry Bird, and Dan Issel, he might be trying to compete now and may not want to wait 2-3 seasons for Wafer to reach his potential. I could see this pick getting traded for some more immediate help.
Predicted Grades: C+ C C C+ C
9. Seattle SuperSonics - Deron Williams
Breakdown: Im just hoping that Eric ignores the write up and makes Deron into the player he should be, because if not this is a huge reach at 9. IRL he was a great scorer and could be the best player on a contending team, who Duc would love to add. The profile makes him seem like a good backup low TO PG.
Predicted Grades: C+ C+ B+ C+ C
10. Sacramento Kings - Charlie Villanueva
Breakdown: This team needs help pretty much everywhere, but they at least have playable players at center and point guard. I think Villanueva will be the best player available here as a stretch four who can block some shots. As long as his inside isn’t too low, I think he has a bright future. While he’s listed as a solid passer, there are also a couple of points in his profile about him having good ball-handling skills, so there’s hope he isn’t a turnover machine.
Predicted Grades: C+ B B C C
11. Dallas Mavericks (from Tri-Cities) - Monte Ellis
Breakdown: UPSIDE UPSIDE UPSIDE. Similar player to Lou Williams but who will be much more turnover prone. Still, at 11 in this draft going after a player who could be an elite scorer and might get two teen TCs ? I think you gotta take that risk.
Predicted Grades: B- B C+ D D
12. Orlando Magic - Martell Webster
Breakdown: Skrouse likes young athletic players, and he already has a couple of bigs (DeAndre Jordan, Antonio McDyess) and a point guard (Derrick Rose) who fit that mold. Webster is only 18 and can grow at least one inch while still maintaining shooting guard eligibility. He’ll be a project player, but someone who ought to have plenty of room for growth.
Predicted Grades: B- C- C C C
13. Vancouver Grizzlies (from Portland) - Hakim Warrick
Breakdown: The profile write up is the perfect third big. Low usage athletic shot blocker who will have a ton of value in the league. Druce already selected Theo last year, but you gotta go best player available and that is Warrick.
Predicted Grades: C+ F C- B+ C+
14. Detroit Pistons - Raymond Felton
Breakdown: Mike’s never one to pass on profile players when they’re available, so I have him taking the last profile guy left on the board at his biggest position of need. I don’t have a ton of faith in Felton panning out, so I could see someone like Jarrett Jack going here instead depending on how the grades turn out. But as it stands, I have it as Felton, who can hopefully be a steady point guard for the Pistons. They don’t need him to be much more with Erving and Cummings scoring the majority of their points.
Predicted Grades: C C+ B C D+
15. Washington Bullets - Gerald Green
Breakdown: Freakish athlete with tons of upside, high school fecta thought he was going to the best player in the league after watching his Mcdonald All American performance. So wow, what a steal at 15.
Predicted Grades: B- C+ C C C
16. Charlotte Hornets - Ike Diogu
Breakdown: The Hornets take a swing on a non-profile big here who had an excellent 4.0 career and should come into 5.0 with a strong enough build to work with. I think this pick could end up being whichever non-profile big has the strongest gradeset out of the gate, and I feel like that could be Diogu.
Predicted Grades: B- C C C C+
17. Oakland Oaks - Salim Stoudamire
Breakdown: Splash Splash Splash, Salim Stoudamire taking a 3 point bath. Pac 12 POY, unreal shooter and has an incredible name.
Predicted Grades: C- B+ C+ D D
