Sometimes a diamond in the rough emerges from the Minor League, but more often you have to squint reallllly hard to see a serviceable backup. With that said, entering Free Agency this season we have the following players worth tracking on expiring deals in the Minors:
(All stats measured in per36 format, P/TSA and PER at the end of the line)
J.J. Anderson, PF (Cleveland Cavaliers)
18.6 9.5 1.4 1.1 1.2 1.9 .451 .746 .118 1.031 15.0
Solid defensive stats and a willingness to score, which is the biggest thing lacking from most Minor Leaguers. His rebounding is slightly above average and FT% isn't bad for a big. His P/TSA is woeful, but he could likely get some love and become a 3rd or 4th big in the big show.
Rod Higgins, C (of St. Louis, Spirits)
14.8 7.3 2.1 1.7 1.9 1.7 .385 .478 .000 .806 10.8
Bear with me here… he is possibly the worst offensive player in the league. I feel comfortable saying he is bottom 3 in that regard. On the other hand, his 3.6 bleals/36 place him among the most elite defenders. Might be worth the tiniest of glances to round out a bench for a 5th big. Would be an ideal candidate for a negative -25 to get him to shoot less.
Linton Townes, SF (of St. Louis, Spirits)
10.6 6.3 1.7 1.7 0.3 1.2 .491 .667 .318 1.073 10.6
Solid defensive wing who has a decent FG%. His steal production would be Top 20 in the big leagues. His main problem appears to be a jumpshot. With +25 in that category I would even say he is playable in the majors.
Darren Tillis, C (Chicago Zephyrs)
18.4 9.1 3.2 1.2 0.9 2.2 .488 .701 .250 1.091 16.3

Probably the most ready to contribute, sans upgrades, Minor Leaguer we will see enter FA this season. His turnovers aren't great, but he balances it out with an abnormally high amount of assists from a center. He could easily be a rotation player on a good team for the next few years with some love (+25 to inside/jumpshot).
The rest of the crop is in the Minor League for a reason. Avoid them.
