Welcome to the Free Agency Retrospective for the year 2000. We are only looking 60 games into the past, but with this unique Free Agency period, it’s worth it to take a quick look at who was snatched up off the rubbish heap after the Creation Draft that absolutely should’ve been drafted. Value is split into 3 tiers along my own guidelines, taking into account age, salary, contract length, production, and value in the Software Creation Draft. Any opinions are mine only. RTs are not endorsements. Not designed for ingestion, topical use only. We will return to this endeavor in the 2003 season looking back at 2001. Until then, my friends, stay thirsty.
Tier 1 – Solid Starters
Zeus Shuttlesworth – Center – 36 - $1,000,000 (1 year) (UD in Software Draft)
Zeus’s age is an obvious downside, but he is putting work for the Orlando Magic (courtesy of a trade with Killy Bing). An elite shot blocker for the Magic with a pretty high FG%, he would be worth at least an MLE for every year remaining in his career. If skrouse wanted to play him more minutes, I’m sure he would be Top 3 in the league in blocks.
Jared Terrell – Shooting Guard – 24 - $4,500,000 (3 years) (4.12 in Software Draft)
Obviously he could be a good stats, bad team guy… but his %s are legit on a pretty good amount of volume. His TOs aren’t cringeworthy and he’s at least stealing the ball a bit. His rebounding numbers are pretty bad… but there is something to work with in him.
George Kok – Center – 34 - $6,000,000 (1 year) (6.22 in Software Draft)
The Koksman is an efficient scoring machine who doesn’t block anything. He’s the new normal in the SIM league and could be a key player in a big man rotation for the rest of his career. Along with Zeus, it will be very intriguing to see what kind of price these guys can demand on the market this year.
Tier 2 – Other Solid Rotation Players
Nick King – Small Forward – 25 - $3,000,000 (2 years) (7.10 in Software Draft)
Nick slides in for 23 minutes a game off the bench for the Magicks of Orlando. He scores at a decent clip, with great FG% and FT%. His 1:1 A:TO ratio is quite bad, but not toxic for a bench SF. He’s a dude that should hang around for a while in the league, never a starter, but can do some things.
Kendall Stephens – Shooting Guard – 25 - $4,500,000 (3 years) (5.24 in Software Draft)
Coming off the bench for the Hornets is a guy who really needs a long look. His %s are incredible… he just needs some volume. Get this man in The Lab for some strength and inside and he will be supplanting Terrell in the starting lineup in no time at all.
Billy Hoyle – Shooting Guard – 32 - $4,500,000 (1 year) (8.15 in Software Draft)
Old white man game off the bench for the best team in the league. Even Jesus needs a break once in a while, so Billy eats up those minutes and scores quite efficiently in that time, especially from range. Like other older players, he won’t get a big payday, but he will absolutely be on contenders for savvy GMs for the next 5-6 seasons.
Lil Penny – Point Guard – 28 - $2,000,000 (2 years) (UD in Software Draft)
The only undrafted (in software) guard to make the list, Lil Penny continues to produce, despite the height-ism rampant in TMBSL. His shooting %s are absurd and he should be getting more time, especially as the Suns try to move the Purple One to a different team. Great value, despite age and size limitations.
John Stockston – Point Guard – 29 - $4,300,000 (1 year) (12.4 in Software Draft)
Guys, “Stocks” is right there in his name! His ½ BPG is pretty high for a PG in 5.0, along with 1.4 steals, he’s a defensive gem. His shooting isn’t great, but he offers a solid A:TO and will be a valiant servant off the bench for contenders. Should be sought after in the ’01 FA market pretty heavily.
Tier 3 – Worth Watching
Grayson Allen – Shooting Guard – 23 - $2,500,000 (3 years) (2.23 in Software Draft)
HeavyReign strikes again the most blatant way possible. A white, Duke guard at 2.23? rv needs to get this kid on the court more. He’s putting up decent number (very similar to Nick King) in limited minutes for a decent team. He isn’t ready for the big time yet, but the software saw something in him… and so do I.
Sterling Manley – Center – 19 - $6,000,000 (1 year) (8.7 in Software Draft)
A more intriguing prospect for the Lakers than Kok is the Manley Man. Only 19 but his game is older, a rare gem to not be sent to the O-League for development. Manley on the market next season should fetch a decent multi-year deal. His %s are worthwhile already and he could get a big TC bump.
Marcus Foster – Shooting Guard – 25 - $2,000,000 (2 years) (9.24 in Software Draft)
Marcus has a bad (read: negative) A:TO ratio, but shoots phenomenally well on a small sample. With a little luck and love he could develop into a solid bench SG for a decent team.
Daniel Giddens – Center – 21 - $4,500,000 (1 year) (UD in Software Draft)
Young big who blocks at a reasonable rate. His %s are awful, but at least his volume isn’t too high. Could hit a few TCs of luck and be solid.
Tier 4 – Garbage and the O League
All other players not listed above are either participating in the O League, have not played at all, or are garbage. Sorry to these guys.
