Expansion Draft Alternative (192 views)

been thinking about an alternative to our expansion draft model - it's not possible to have all teams filled by the commissioner, but i could run one team under certain strict rules, and if someone showed up they could take it, and if they didn't or if someone additional wanted to sign up in the same season we could still use the expansion draft

here are the rules i have in mind for the New York Knicks
-never draft, wouldn't even have draft picks until a human took over
-never FA, no bids of any kind
-never trade
-sign all last team Knicks or failing that from the middle of the FA list
-accept all resigns unless i decide not to

seems pretty straightforward to me

it would be the middle of the FA list as determined by software which isn't necessarily mid-level but since it'll be post-TC signings i don't really care

I like the setup we currently have, but it is tough when a new GM shows up the day after the draft and therefore has to wait two weeks.

In a perfect world it'd be great if they could start at any point during the offseason, but I don't have a good idea for making that possible.

Allow them to take any of the creampuff teams and begin signing FAs. Assign them a random available wheel position so they can participate in the draft and then they can also go through an expansion draft at the end of their first season.

Yeah we need something so GMs can join at anytime. Idk what but it needs to be a talking point.

I feel like the biggest issue with "expansion at any time" was someone pulling a GMOTY (fuck you, by the way, GMOTY - I hope you read this) and taking a team, making a bunch of moves, impacting the landscape of the league, then leaving.

If someone can come in and take an empty team at any time, maybe fill it with FAs or something, and then have to hang around until the end of the season before really getting to make big moves (via an expansion draft and rookie draft), maybe that works? I guess this is pretty close to eric's idea.

We can't eliminate the risk of a gm leaving at anytime imo, no matter what we do

Yeah they can come in and sign FAs from the pool and participate in the season but no trading picks until your first offseason.

i also like it being less work for me

let's try it the next time someone shows up and see what happens
