Thought of this last night, what if after the playoffs teams could "trade Bird rights"? In the software this would mean editing a player on an expiring contract from one team to another so they would offer to resign / have Bird years for that team. Would people be interested in this?

Is there any sort of real-life version of this?

sure why not
since we're on the subject of birds, can we start retaining them for players signed after fa but before sim 1?

So you could trade an expired deal to another team?
What is the window for this? Only before FA or through it?

Marques Johnson's contract was expiring last offseason but I don't intend to renew his deal I trade his expiring bird rights to Odin for 5k bucks because I don't need him but Odin has no one with birds and wants to be able to sign a FA to a 10 million expiring deal to make a trade work
