Top 5 Teams
1. Miami Heat
Odin is bringing back 4.0. He balances lethal perimeter scoring from the trio of Beal, West, and Irving with a great two way threat at the 4 in Bob Pettit and then great defense from Howard and Swift. He also has the benefit of great depth with Kenny Smith and Corey Brewer coming off the bench. Calling my shot: this is the year that Odin finally wins his title. He doesn't have the major issues that last year's top two appear to have at the moment.
2. Orlando Magic
T-Mac's injury is concerning with Skrouse's stark lack of depth so its unlikely that Orlando's finish in the standings this year will reflect their true talent level. However, at full strength I think this is still the most talented starting 5 in the league so if they can find a third big and potentially some help at the 3 off the bench for Dame their outlook looks much better for the playoffs. The lack of depth will probably give them an uphill battle come playoff time though. I predict that Orlando is the team that faces Miami in the Finals.
3. Chicago Bulls
This position in the rankings says more about how many teams are really going for it now than it does about the Bulls. This is still a very good team led by triumvirate better than any other team in the league has in Oden, Oscar, and LeBron. My concern now is that they've given away a bit of their depth and flexibility having moved on from Dwyane Wade and the departure of Jonas will hurt I think more than some have anticipated because Darko/Zarko have some holes in their games. This team is still as big a contender for the title as anyone and I think would become the favorite if they solidified the 4 and Rick Barry bounces back from a bad Sim 1. Some downside potential if Kawhi continues to slowly decline like he has in the past several seasons and Barry doesn't bounce back to the efficiency we've seen the past 2-3 years. An injury to Oden would be devastating.
4. Harlem Globetrotters
Ward pairs elite offensive efficiency and defense from his harem of elite bigs with a touch of elite scoring efficiency from Big Dog and lockdown perimeter D from Jerry Sloan and MKG on the wings. He could use an upgrade at PG and the outlook here would be much better with God still in tow but I think this team could compete to make the Finals this year if Ward makes an upgrade at PG.
5. Portland Trail Blazers
The returning champions must be mentioned since almost all of their crucial pieces have returned. They were a bit of a longshot and underdog champion last year and are off to a tough start since they had the toughest schedule for Sim 1 outside of the Tri-Cities. They are a threat as long as we don't see any major contributors take a step back this season but that is a bit of a concern with all of their major contributors over 27 years old and their biggest piece now 34 years old in David Robinson.
Top 5 Rookies
1. Danny Manning
Manning looks like a potential star for the Bullets. Hopefully KN will pop in and give him his upgrades to take him completely to stardom but plus efficiency and no major holes so far looks really good. Along with the trade for Wade and Chris Bosh (more coming on him later), KN finally has some pieces around which he can build a team. It's a bit of a shame that's happening as Greg Monroe is likely cycling out but look for this team to potentially make some noise for the playoffs this year.
2. Mitch Richmond
Everything on Mitch's stat line says star in the making so far except for the turnovers. That is a glaring issue but if he continues to put up the numbers he is right now otherwise, it could justify a +25 handling upgrade that would make Mitch's turnovers a bit more palatable. While that issue keeps him from taking the top spot from Danny Manning, all the good things he does means there is more to work with than just about anyone in this class and he might have the highest upside.
3. "Thunder" Dan Majerle
It's not super sexy so far but there are things to work with here. Efficiency is bad but not unsalvageable. Not much volume but that's to be expected playing with Sam Jones, Guy Rodgers, and two bigs that shoot in Camby and Scott. His rebounds are solid, steals are solid, turnovers aren't an issue. Put some points into making him more of a scoring threat and profit.
4. Rik Smits
He hasn't made an appearance yet in the regular season but he makes it in on the lack of other options and strength of his preseason. He put up over 15 points per 36 on 1.117 pts/tsa and played good defense with over a steal and block each per game. Turnovers aren't too bad but the rebounding needs work. There's some things to like here and definitely a lot to work with.
5. Vernon Maxwell
Very good numbers through Sim 1. He didn't play in preseason so we'll see if that holds up. But so far great efficiency, decent volume, rebounding is passable for a SG, and good defensive stats with no turnover issues.
Biggest Surprises
1. Unleash Emeka
I'm not sure if he's trying to make the case for just letting David Robinson go after this year or if he's trying to come for Dwight Howard's spot as a starter, but Emeka Okafor is on an absolute early season tear despite playing some of the stiffer competition in the league. So far he's putting up a 1.537 pts/tsa rate and a PER of 28.2 through 5 games. Feed that man!
2. Bullets Fired
Washington has a winning record through Sim 1 and appears to have some pieces to make some moves. Now joining the always spectacular Greg Monroe is a rookie sensation in Danny Manning who leads the way for Washington at 1.216 pts/tsa while rebounding and defending his position well. Bosh adds some defense off the bench and Dwyane Wade finally gives them a piece on the wing that can make some noise. Marques Johnson isn't so bad himself after finally breaking free of reserve duty for years in Charlotte and Atlanta. If this team finds a point guard who can protect the ball and not turn it over so much we may see a playoff parade in the nation's capitol.
3. Try Shitty Blackhawks
To no surprise to anyone who paid attention to BK's plan for this season, the Blackhawks are bad. They stink. Out loud. We knew this would happen but I didn't anticipate it being quite so bad through one sim. This team couldn't score if their life depended on it. They might not be bad enough on D to ever give them a shot to lose to a cupcake squad but BK is closer to obtaining this goal than I ever thought possible.
4. Hornets have some sting?
Some expected the Hornets to be a challenger to make the back of the playoffs. This is probably going to be a suprise to the readers because with a 20+ MOV so far in the season you might think I'm inclined to talk about how good they are. But that isn't what this is about. I think this team is far, far worse than the metrics would suggest so far. If you take away games with creampuffs and the Blackhawks, this team is 1-4 with a very negative MOV. They are very talented at the 1-3 and especially on the wing but their bigs are so incredibly putrid they probably still are not a playoff team without some moves.
5. Oakland Oh-no
I quietly thought that Oakland might challenge to make the playoffs this year. With the tag team of Scott and Camby in the frontcourt and Guy and Jones on the perimeter with Thunder Dan and Miner now in the mix to anchor the 3 and solidify wing depth, I thought this might be the most complete team that Kujo has fielded so far. But all they've done in response is just miss everything. Guy and Sam Jones can't hit the broadside of a barn. I blame Tobias Harris. Once thought to be a notorious team killer after sabotaging Portland and Washington, he was starting to rehabilitate his image with seasons on great teams in Orlando and Chicago. It appears he's back to his evil ways.
Best Non-Rookie, Non-Exception Contracts
1. Bernard King - 2 years, $10 million
Some people balked when Delap gave up so much draft capitol to acquire Bernard King but he has been worth every of the relatively few pennies he's cost Dallas since. A bit one-dimensional since the primary thing he brings to the table is scoring, but he's posted scoring numbers like 20.2 ppg on 1.245 pts/tsa and 22.3 ppg on 1.204 pts/tsa
2. Glenn Robinson - 5 years, $31 million
Big Dog is an extremely efficient scorer from the wing and fits in perfectly with the inside focus of the Globetrotters. Having him buttoned up for the next 5 seasons at just $31 million total is an incredible deal that will allow Ward to pay more to keep his gang of great bigs together.
3. Grant Hill - 3 years, $20.522 million
Grant Hill is another wing that provides just enough to be a very good role player on a team that's focused on running through its bigs. He has always given a team friendly discount and that continues with his current deal where he is making less than $21 million over the next three seasons.
4. Walt Bellamy - 3 years, $15.75 million
Finally thrust into a starting role in Orlando in the face of several departures, Bellamy is rising to the occasion and far outplaying his modest salary. A career 1.107 pts/tsa scorer, he is a league average offensive player but makes his mark by cleaning the glass at a high level and defending his position well with a career 0.9 steals and 1.3 blocks per 36 minutes
5. Acie Law - 2 years, $2 million
It remains to be seen if last season was just a small sample size fluke, but Law is back with an offseason camp and another +10 to his inside after finishing 4th among point guards last season in Win Shares per 48 minutes. He continues to be in a backup role behind Hawks legend God Shammgod but is being groomed as the future of the position for Atlanta.
Most Interesting Minor Leaguers
1. Vernon Maxwell
Mentioned above. There's a lot to like here and I am interested to see if this holds or is just a major small sample size aberration.
2. Chris Kaman
It appears his days in the minors are over now that Ward is calling him up but he may actually be good. He combines good rebounding with good blocks and low turnovers. His offense has been awful so far, but that is easy enough to fix with another mentorship, an offseason camp, and some major points dumped into his scoring.
3. Tito Horford
Similar profile to Chris Kaman but with more upside as a 20 year old with more room to fill out and still showing A potential.
4. Luke Ridnour
I'm not sure how much you'll be able to continue to upgrade him because his jumper is getting close to the cap and he may be at or near the inside cap for PGs, but he could potentially be an upgrade for several teams already at PG.
5. TJ Ford
Will lead all minor leaguers in PER once Chris Kaman rejoins the Globetrotters later this afternoon. He's a low usage PG who does barely anything on defense or the glass which makes him slightly above league average in that regard among PGs. He doesn't turn it over and while he isn't an efficient scorer and it may be hard to make him one, he could be a quality backup PG for a team down the road.
Top 5 Over 32 Years Old
1. Tracy McGrady
Perhaps the GOAT wing of 5.0 (for now). Highly decorated, key piece of two title teams, and the lynchpin of one of three teams that has dominated winning championships in this decade of sim league. One of the greats and a clear unanimous HOFer. He's hurt right now, but when he's healthy he's still among the handful of the best to do it. Hopefully he continues to stay with us for several more years.
2. David Robinson
With his Playoff MVP last season, he put the cherry on top of a career of elite performance and is now likely a unanimous HOFer. He demonstrates all-around excellence and does everything well. One of my favorite TMBSL players that I haven't had on one of my own teams. Great player, great guy.
3. Stephen Jackson (former Hawk)
Still among the handful of most elite wings in the league despite his advanced age and the second of three 33 year old wing players that make up 60% of this list. Jackson will be called upon more than ever in Orlando this season with T-Mac now on the shelf for almost a third of the season. He's up for the task. One of the two GOAT Hawks and a 1st ballot HOFer.
4. Kawhi Leonard (former Hawk)
I love Kawhi. He reminds me of 4.0 MKG and he helped bring 2 titles to Atlanta. The advanced metrics have never loved him as much as he deserves and he's slowly starting to decline but he's a great addition to any team and I'm glad Tim picked him up so he avoided the shelf in the Tri-Cities. Along with LeBron he should bring an unmatched edge to the wing on defense in Chicago and appears to be an attempt to counter the high-powered wing duo that Orlando has. Another clear HOFer.
5. Greg Monroe
He doesn't get enough credit for how good he is because he did it mostly for the Bullets. The oldest player in the league now that Tim Duncan is shelved for the year and is likely done with his career (which is why he didn't make the list), Monroe still continues to plug away at an incredibly high pace despite playing for almost nothing over the last decade. A true professional. HOF material even though he might not get in due to the lack of team success.
