In what was seen as more of a formality than breaking news, Dave Lattin was inducted into the Chicago Bulls' famed and difficult-to-enter Big Baller Bulls Ring of Honor, joining chairman Tim Pig and former teammate Miles Bridges.
While Lattin retired following the 2023 season, when it was assumed he would be officially inducted by the Bulls, the former superstar and current Hall of Famer politely declined an official ceremony as he believed it would detract from his new position as Assistant Coach with the organization that he called home for 13 seasons.
"I wanted to continue to help this team win moving forward," Lattin told The Athletic. "I accomplished many great things during my career, but there was still more to be done. I didn't want a post mortem to be done on my career when it was only really getting started."
Now, after helping guide the Bulls to one more championship (and counting) from the bench and mentoring 18-year-old phenom LeBron James, Lattin has been given a lifetime appointment on the Bulls staff. He's currently an assistant coach, but is open to other possibilities within the organization.
"I love being on the bench with the guys and being able to help from there," the two-time player champion said. "But I could definitely see myself in the front office one day too. I've already been helping in that department with scouting and trade negotiations."
With the lifetime appointment, Lattin gave in and agreed to an official pre-game ceremony with the team. While most agreed that Lattin could have been informally inducted during his playing career, the ceremony still acted as an occasion for the city of Chicago to unify and come together as the United Chicago Liberty Mutual Centre Presented by Nissan exceeded sellout capacity with an attendance of 23,864,791 and revenue eclipsing $9bn according to initial reports.
