I was going to call this article "Hidden Gems", but this name seems more appropriate.
Call this a further down the road version of Sim 1 Overreactions, but I'm writing yet another article where I overreact to small sample sizes. Here are 10 guys I think aren't getting enough PT whose GM's should give them another look. Unfortunately a few of these GM's are asleep at the wheel but if they'd wake up, I'd think they would see their teams are not as bad as they think.
***Must have at least 60 total minutes of playing time but less than 20 mpg through Sim 4 for consideration***
1. Moritz Wagner, PF Miami Heat
Key Stats: 1.11 pts/tsa, 15.9 points/36, 10.0 rebounds/36, 1.3 blocks/36
Moritz Wagner has elite efficiency so far. Right now the mean pts/tsa in the league is 1.01 and Wagner is sitting much higher at 1.11. He's also in the 64th percentile for scoring volume per 36, 78th percentile for rebounding volume per 36, and 91st percentile for block volume. Moritz's only problem is he's blocked by Canes' two really good young forwards in Yante Maten and Zion Williamson. Canes might want to hold on to Wagner in case of disaster at the end of Maten's current two year deal...but this is defintely a great value player with a 4 year, $14 mil contract. Only concern is the efficiency wasn't as elite in the preseason.
2. Mikal Bridges, SG Cleveland Cavaliers
Key Stats: 1.11 pts/tsa, 17.7 points/36, 8.6 rebounds/36, .9 turnovers/36
Get this guy in the starting lineup, Shaun! This is your best player! Bridges is a top-tier SG in this league right now. He offers elite efficiency and per 36 minutes is in the 75th percentile for scoring volume, 65th percentile for rebounding (AT SG!!!!), 84th percentile for steals, 63rd percentile for blocks (again, AT SG!!!!), and 75th percentile for turnovers. This kid is a stud and hits the market with no birds after a 2-year deal.
3. Pete Holzman, SF New York Knicks
Key Stats: 1.19 pts/tsa, 8.8 points/36, 9.5 rebounds/36, .8 steals/36 and blocks/36
Pete Holzman could have some potential as a rotation D/R big in the world of 5.0. He is only in the 32nd percentile of players in scoring volume but at elite efficiency numbers so far, his rebounding is in the 73rd percentile, and his blocks are in the 86th. Could he add some more value for the contending Knicks in a larger role?
4. Jalek Felton, PG Utah Jazz
Key Stats: 1.11 pts, tsa, 25.4 points/36, 2.5 steals/36
Jalek isn't getting more run because of a position eligibility issue, but come on SPL, get this guy on the freaking court. He has the look of an elite scorer and his defensive grade is hiding a high steals attribute. He doesn't seem to be as interested in passing the ball as he does herpes but the man needs to see the floor. FREE RAY'S NEPHEW!
5. Peyton Gragg, F Sacramento Kings
Key Stats: 1.07 pts/tsa, 17.3 points/36, 11.2 rebounds/36, 1 steal/36, 2.4 blocks/36
This guy has the ability to be an elite small forward if Billy moves him down. As Fason said, he could be the Grant Long of 5.0. The good news is that projects as an elite role player in this league. The good news is that Billy appears to be ready to move him into a starting role. Really good piece in return for GMJ. Keep in mind - 73rd percentile in pts/36, 89th in rebounding, 65th in assists (with a 3.2 ast/TO ratio), 97th percentile in blocks.
6. Zeus Shuttlesworth, C Orlando Magic
Key Stats: 4 blocks per 36 minutes
Get this dude on the court and let him block some shots! He is one of the premier shotblockers in the league and his rebounding is passable enough to justify him being on the court at the 71st percentile for the league. Bad news though - currently at 6.3 turnovers per 36. That's probably a bit of an outlier, but wow! Hope the rest of your lineup holds onto the ball. Regardless, a lot of players in this league have flaws now. I think his elite skill makes up for it.
7. Jevon Carter, PG Milwaukee Bucks
Key Stats: 1.07 pts/tsa, 22.4 points/36, 5.7 rebounds/36, 7.3 assists/36, 2.0 steals/36
This guy is like Felton in that the reason he's not on the floor more is due to a positional eligiblity issue more than anything. But find a way! This cat can do it all. 88th percentile for scoring, 40th for rebounding (at PG), 87th for assists, 93rd percentile for steals, and he sports a passable 2.57 ast/TO ratio. If I'm trofie, I'm working on getting this guy PG eligible.
8. Corey Woods, C Utah Jazz
Key Stats: 1.05 pts/tsa, 12.7 rebounds/36, 1.3 blocks/36, 1.1 turnovers/36
This is what a solid D/R big is going to look like to start 5.0. Above average efficiency with scoring volume in the 26th percentile, 96th percentile rebounding, and 91st percentile blocks. This guy should be getting 30+ minutes per game. Get in the game, SPL. I don't know that 91st percentile blocking (1.3 per 36) really changes the complexion of your defense all that much, but hey, if it's your strategy, this guy can do it.
9. Emmett Naar, PG Minnesota Timberwolves
Key Stats: 1.16 pts/tsa, 17.2 points/36, 7.6 assists/36, 1.3 steals/36, 1.3 turnovers/36
Look at those pts/tsa numbers per 36 and tell me he wouldn't at least be better than 10 or more starting PG's right now. Unfortunately for him, Ian has this position pretty well covered. Still, I think he could be an upgrade on Sim Dump. 72nd percentile scoring, 88th percentile for assists, 67th percentile for steals. START THIS MAN!
10. Rui Hachimura, SF Miami Heat
Key Stats: 1.20 pts/tsa
This is another Canes guy and a definite small sample size warrior. But it's hard to ignore the 1.20 pts/tsa and 23.7 pts/36 so far. He also gets a decent amount of blocks for a forward (81st percentile) so far although his rebounding leaves a lot to be desired (37th percentile). The good news here too is that his 1.20 pts/tsa is a continuation of what he put up in the small preseason sample as well.
Honorable Mention - Teenagers:
Bol Bol, C Dallas Mavericks
Key Stats: 1.59 pts/tsa
This is definitely way too small a sample size, but if I were a GM I'd have to know. It would be hard to choose whose minutes to give to Bol since Spooky Skeleton is providing a lot with his 3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game as their rotation big, but I would want to see more of this kid if I could with the efficiency so far. Unfortunately, his preseason doesn't show that he can keep this efficiency up and he doesn't offer much otherwise. Still. Show me more.
Jarred Vanderbilt, PF Denver Nuggets
Key Stats: 11.6 rebounds/36, 2.4 blocks+steals/36, .9 turnovers/36
Vanderbilt is another guy like Corey Woods. Low scoring but passable efficiency, good rebounder, and good enough on defense. He even has a bit more upside at 19 years old with some blocking upgrades. Give him a look, Sloutang.
