In his "rookie" year Ben Simmons took 21% of his shots from 10' or more and made 31% of them for a true shooting percentage of 31%. In that season the NBA league averages were 56%, 38%, and 49% - obviously not taking threes sabotaged his TS%, but he was reasonably close in FG% and since the three point line is simply a bit of paint as opposed to a magical forcefield it was plausible he could make three point shots at about the same rate if he would just take them.
Fast forward one year and he reduced those numbers to 10% and 21% respectively. For reference, Shaquille O'Neal for his career took 7% of his shots from 10'+ and made 27% - this would not be my ideal choice for an optimistic jump shooting comp.
So far this year, Ben Simmons is taking only 5%(!!!!!) of his shots from "range". (He is back to making a crisp 33%, though.)
We've had plenty of NBA players become stars that couldn't shoot for various definitions of "couldn't". Ben Simmons' escalating refusal to take jump shots is unprecedented for a perimeter player.
