After wandering the abyss of constant roster turnover since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's departure from Miami, the sandy beaches and beautiful women of Little Havana attracted, once again, the best player in TMBSL history this offseason when Australian import Kyrie Irving told Dallas Mavericks GM D. Lap "Throws" to f*** right off and shove his sub-max contract up his @$$. The move ended up sending at least three franchises by this reporter's count into a downward spiral.
Having a player of Irving's caliber saw the Heat once again forego their tried and true "one-year contracts ONLY" strategy, something they've only done once before en route to winning their zeroeth championship when Kareem "Lew" Abdul- "Al-" Jabbar "Cindor" came to South Beach. OUT were former first overall pick Anthony Davis and their 2030 first round draft pick. IN were Bradley Beal, Bob Pettit and his max contract, as well as John Havlicek and his unprecedented (in Miami) extended MLE.
It was an incredible start to the season for the Heat and 30-year-old Irving, who led the league in scoring for much of the season. Miami appeared ready to coast its way to the Eastern Division crown, something that Óðinn's club hadn't done since 2021 when Kareem, Tim Duncan, Nick Van Exel, and Allen Iverson were in town.
Today, however, is a different story. Our beloved Heat sit fourth overall and third in the division, once again falling behind Orlando and Harlem in the Eastern hierarchy.
What caused the freefall?
Look no further than the seventeen-and-a-half-million dollar man, Mr. Kyrie Irving.
His play over the last seven games has been pathetic and directly correlated with this team's drop in the standings.
Let's look at the numbers:
Games: 7
Points per game: 21
Assists per game: 3.6
Rebounds per game: 5.7
Blocks per game: 0.7
Steals per game: 2.7
Turnovers per game: 0.7
Field Goal %: .426
Three Point %: .458
A second max contract for THIS? Points, rebounds, assists, and field goal percentage are all lower than his season average, clearly demonstrating that he just doesn't have the mental makeup to succeed down the stretch, a truth made more evident by the fact that he was carried to his only championship in Dallas by all-time greats such as DeMarcus Cousins, Bison Dele, and Manu Ginobili.
This reporter and Miami Heat fan is OFFICIALLY calling for the AMNESTY of Kyrie Irving's ALBATROSS contract as it's become clear very quickly that he just can't lead a team to victory.
I, for one, long for the days of Vlade Divac and Rodney Rogers being forced to play every night as though it was for a new contract, because it was.
