Welcome to the 1st annual edition of the Team Efficiency Ratings. For those fans of very in depth statistical analysis that takes almost every detail into account, I am very sorry to disappoint. This is a fairly simple way to quantify a player or team's efficiency, and I happen to still like them so here we go.
For those interested, here is a short explanation of the NBA's Player Efficiency Rating. It is a very simple way to judge how efficient a player is when they're on the floor. These are different from (Hollinger's) PER.
Look at this example (from NBA.com) of 2 players from the same game.
Player A 43 MIN 5-22 FGM-A 7-9 FTM-A 8 REB 6 AST 3 STL 0 BL 3 TO 17 PTS
Player B 29 MIN 5-8 FGM-A 3-4 FTM-A 4 REB 7 AST 0 STL 0 BL 2 TO 15 PTS
Who had the better game? Well player A had more points, assists, double the rebounds and got to the charity strip for 5 more shots. His efficiency rating is a solid +10. But player B's rating was +20 as he put up comparable stats on less possessions.
The formula the NBA uses is, shockingly enough, very simple:
Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks - Turnovers - Field Goals Missed - Free Throws Missed
Quick Analysis: No surprise here, the Rockets' 3 headed monster of Gallatin, Winter and Leslie are posting a combined total of 79.1 PPG. Perhaps more impressively is Seattle's super solo act Jon Pierce (35.2 PPG) and Vancouver's dynamic duo of Mikan (33.4 PPG) and Templeton (32.5 PPG) carrying their squads to the 2nd and 3rd highest Team EFF rankings early on. And an honoroable mention to the the LA Clippers, the only other squad currently with a 145+ offensive ranking.
Team EFF
154.7 Rockets
148.2 SuperSonics
148.0 Grizzlies
146.0 Clippers
141.2 Magic
138.6 Spurs
138.5 Pistons
137.1 Timberwolves
136.8 Knicks
135.9 Mavericks
135.4 Hawks
133.5 Globetrotters
133.1 Pacers
131.6 Bucks
131.3 Wizards
129.1 Trailblazers
123.5 Suns
122.8 Kings
119.9 Bulls
117.0 Lakers
116.6 Heat
113.5 Nuggets
113.0 Warriors
110.8 Celtics
109.1 Hornets
109.1 Raptors
107.3 Jazz
103.5 Cavaliers
102.6 Bullets
Quick Analysis: If DJ Rony doesn't collect the first DPOY I will be surprised. He's averaging over a block and half more than league's next best and he's got his T'Wolves rocking way out in first with the top opponent EFF rating of 102.7. GM Sugar Daddy Shaun earns the right to have the first East team mentioned in inaugural rankings. And GM duc is the only one to hold a team in the top 3 in both EFF and oEFF, I believe we know who will lead the next category.
Team oEFF
102.7 Timberwolves
115.1 Cavaliers
116.0 SuperSonics
118.1 Wizards
120.9 Knicks
121.2 Pistons
121.5 Hawks
122.4 Lakers
122.9 Warriors
123.1 Mavericks
124.1 Raptors
124.5 Bulls
125.6 Globetrotters
126.6 Pacers
126.6 Rockets
126.7 Trailblazers
126.8 Celtics
126.9 Bucks
127.3 Magic
130.5 Spurs
130.6 Grizzlies
130.7 Clippers
131.6 Jazz
132.7 Heat
133.1 Kings
140.4 Nuggets
143.3 Bullets
143.7 Suns
148.0 Hornets
Quick Analysis: Or will we!!! Admit it, you all thought it would be Seattle. But GM Ian strikes again, not only is his defensive beast killing his opponent's EFF ratings, the no 1 overall pick from the Creation Draft is putting up an astonishing 29.4 PPG at the ripe old age of just 19. Good things are brewing in Minnesota, watch out league. Seattle is still crushing things in 2nd however as the only other squad with at least a +30 +/- EFF Rating. Rockets round out an all West top 3 in +/- as their slight weakness on DEF costs them in the final category.
Team +/-
34.4 Timberwolves
32.2 SuperSonics
28.1 Rockets
17.4 Grizzlies
17.3 Pistons
15.9 Knicks
15.3 Clippers
13.9 Magic
13.9 Hawks
13.2 Wizards
12.8 Mavericks
8.1 Spurs
7.9 Globetrotters
6.5 Pacers
4.7 Bucks
2.4 Trailblazers
-4.6 Bulls
-5.4 Lakers
-9.9 Warriors
-10.3 Kings
