Earlier today Detroit Pistons GM Mike announced that the organization would let loose beloved role player Chris Webber in order to make room for Bill Russell's new contract .
Webber(34) joined the team back in 2017 and has been a key piece of the team success in the past years going from averaging 20 points per game to taking significant cuts on his minutes to hold a great frontcourt rotation alongside Shawn Kemp, Zan Tabak and now Bill Russell. We spoke to Mike today at Pistons facilities and he was uncomfortable with the announcement.
"Our organization is known for taking care of our guys. When they join us we expect them to have a great long stay even keeping a whole career with the team if possible, you've seen it with Michael, Shawn, Zan, Rick and a couple more. Chris has been great for us, been really classy over his cuts on his minutes while he could been a starter on plenty of teams" were Mike's words also added...
"Rough week, the locker room losing Rick and Chris experience in the same week is nothing easy to handle. Yet, it was a must do in order to keep the team going forward and he understood that it was the necessary move. We spoke about it, we're on good terms and wish him nothing but the best for the rest of his career."
"No doubt he's the best sixth man we've had, great teammate and helped a lot in Bill's fast development" to finish.
Webber played 679 games for the Pistons in his nine years with the team.
