What seemed like a foregone conclusion in the early parts of the 2024 season proved to be one of the more difficult decisions of Bulls GM Tim Pig's career.
After the Dallas Mavericks wasted no time in adding teenage phenom Kevin Durant to an already championship-caliber roster, the Chicago Bulls were on the clock.
They'd done their homework pre-draft, scouting two young centers who couldn't appear more different on the surface. Oden, the one-year wonder at Ohio State who's been hyped in TMBSL scouting circles since he was 15 years old. Gasol, the 22-year-old younger brother of a former fourth overall pick whose career has been disappointing, but still lives on in the Charlotte wasteland.
"Before pre-draft workouts, we were dead set on Greg," revealed Pig at his weekly press conference. "We hadn't seen Marc play much, but when he came over for a private workout, he really impressed us."
In an unprecedented move, Pig went on to reveal how the Bulls had graded each prospect after their workouts:
"Marc was better from the free throw line and extremely strong for his age, and those are two attributes you either have or you don't - they don't improve naturally so a player would have to commit a lot of time to improving either."
"Greg is three years younger, so we knew he had more untapped potential," continued Pig. "Greg was a better all-around rebounder, certainly on the defensive side, and looked better at holding on to the ball. He looked like a better shot blocker, but that's something improves naturally for a lot of youngsters, so it won't surprise us if Marc and Greg eventually put up similar numbers."
"We really went back and forth, but what it ultimately came down to was Greg's superior play on the defensive glass. Marc shows a ton of effort when it's one of his own teammates shooting the ball, but looks like a real lazy **** when the other team misses. Still, Marc had lots of those intangibles that can't be taught, and Greg looked like a bit more of a project."
It looks like one training camp was enough time for Oden to figure things out, as he currently looks like the unanimous choice for Rookie of the Year. Marc, on the other hand, was just sent down to Denver by the Orlando Magic, who grabbed him with the third pick.
