Here at Big BoardTM HQ, we are constantly at the cutting edge of trying to scout (guess) which players will be good before we ever get to see them in a sim. With that in mind, I present to you the Creation Draft Big BoardTM and will give a run-down of how the Creation Draft went vs what the Big BoardTM says about each of the players in this draft.
I've broken down my method a couple of times in 4.0 but I'm constantly updating it...so as a 30k foot overview, the Big BoardTM takes each players alphabetic grades and converts those values into numerical values based on each grade range's midpoint in the software. I then weight higher grades better and lower grades worse because the better a grade is, the more likely it is to reflect true talent at a position (i.e. A+ inside scoring doesn't lie but B inside scoring could include 100 jumping and low attributes otherwise). I then do a weighted average of total attributes and each position has a different formula. The components are weighted as such:
Height, age, and potential - 20% (height is a very small factor ~1%)
Scoring - 45-60% depending on position
Defense/Rebounding - 20-35% depending on position
As you can see, the Big BoardTM is mostly looking to identify who can get buckets. Based on the weighting on numeric grades, it also rewards players with elite skills or good all around games and really dings those with obvious flaws in their games (C- or worse attributes especially).
For right now though, I'm really interested in trying to answer the question of how each GM did in the draft at fielding a team for this upcoming season. Therefore, I've removed the weight for age and potential in my formula so that we can just see how the big board ranks the productive grades of each prospect in the draft. Trying to predict any further than that with the Big BoardTM is foolish at this point because there are a lot of variables at play - what true potential each prospect has, how the GM upgrades them, how the TC's actually go, GM quality, etc.
Without further ado, below is the first annual 5.0 Big BoardTM (with potential and age calculations removed):
So now that we have an objective (my own biases about what makes a player good excluded) ranking of all the players in the draft based on the grades that we have assigned, let's answer some questions about which GM's are good and which GM's suck!
Note: for the purpose of ranking players, I treated each FA signing after the draft as another draft pick and slotted them in order of signing. For example, there were 290 players drafted. The 8th player signed in FA would be pick# 298.
Who made the biggest reach?
1. Magic (-375) - Udoka Azubuike (Drafted at 63, Big BoardTM #438)
2. Bucks (-319) - Tacko Fall (Drafted at 51, Big BoardTM #370)
3. Warriors (-299) - Robert Williams (Drafted at 93, Big BoardTM #392)
4. Hornets (-287) - Trevon Duval (Drafted at 57, Big BoardTM #344)
5. Jazz (-284) - Corey Woods (Drafted at 90, Big BoardTM #374)
Honorable mentions:
(-103) RJ Barrett, Hornets (Drafted at 2, Big BoardTM #105)
(-173) Collin Sexton, Timberwolves (Drafted at 1, Big BoardTM #174)
(-241) Tobi Oyedeji, Pacers (Drafted at 45, Big BoardTM #286)
#1 is obviously a case of where the Big BoardTM was wrong. When I made the grades for Azubuike, I was attempting to create the model of an athletic finisher at the rim who has the potential to be a plus defender and rebounder. I didn't think it could happen in the software, but the early returns from preseason are fairly good. Regardless, the Big BoardTM nerfed him because of my own previous biases about the F+ outside. Looks like we were wrong at Big BoardTM about his ability to be useful, although the value on the pick is still a little questionable IMO. Big BoardTM doesn't give a shit about your D/R bigs, obviously.
LOL Fecta. Trevon Duval was the only non-big reach in the top 5 which followed up his RJ Barrett pick, who was the first guy to be an over-100 spot reach per the Big Board.
Collin Sexton was always going to be overdrafted based on what the Big Board said due to his youth and Odin's love of Alabama. But trading up to draft a guy to play PG who can't play PG yet and then having the 1.1 be a super-sub? Yikes.
Who had the best steal of the draft?
1. Mavericks (+291) - Fletcher McGee (signed at #331, Big BoardTM #40)
2. Hornets (+282) - Jared Terrell (signed at #345, Big BoardTM #63)
3. Knicks (+280) - Richard Richards (signed at #317, Big BoardTM #37)
4. Bucks (+279) - Tra Holder (signed at #398, Big BoardTM #119)
5. Hawks (+262) - Desean Murray (signed at #337, Big BoardTM #75)
Honorable Mentions:
(+170) Phil Lovelette (Drafted at 180, Big Board #10)
(+130) Omar Little (Drafted at 151, Big Board #21)
(+80) Keita Bates-Diop (Drafted at 116, Big Board #36)
The Big BoardTM WILL overrate your shooters. Most of these guys in the top 5 were propped up by A or better shooting. They may have been overlooked as everyone will need efficient scoring but it remains to be seen if their elite skill can cover up the other flaws in their games.
The people who drafted best in the middle rounds according to the Big BoardTM were those who went and got 30+ scoring guards on short contracts who fell further than they should have.
Also, shoutout to newish GM Val Venis for making a great pick with Keita Bates-Diop, who had a nice all-around skill profile for a young player.
On average, who got the most value for their picks?
To answer this question, I took the delta between Big BoardTM slot and draft slot for each player drafted by each team and I took the average of those values.
Best:
Rockets (+52.9)
Knicks (+34.1)
SuperSonics (+30.8)
Magic (+30.3)
Clippers (+30.1)
Worst:
Raptors (-77.0)
Hornets (-76.6)
Warriors (-66.8)
Cavaliers (-59.8)
Lakers (-48.7)
Keep in mind the Big BoardTM is weighted towards current production because we are answering the question "who can compete this year" before all you guys who drafted teenagers get up in arms about being listed in the bottom 5.
Who drafted the youngest/oldest teams?
Oldest:
Spurs - 31.3 years old
Knicks - 29.3 years old
Clippers - 29.0 years old
Cavaliers - 28.5 years old
SuperSonics - 27.5 years old
Youngest:
Hornets - 19.9 years old
Bullets - 20.8 years old
Bulls - 21.1 years old
Nuggets - 21.6 years old
Raptors - 21.6 years old
The future is (maybe) bright for very young teams like the Hornets and Bulls and Bullets. The Spurs better get ready to make a run in the postseason this season and then a run to Germany this offseason.
Who acquired the most talent?
To answer this question, I looked at the total sum of the grades of all players acquired by each team. Obviously, this number will be skewed at the top by those that have filled their G-League programs. But maybe that will be a benefit down the road?
Best:
Kings - 28 players, 1646.4 grade sum
Hawks - 22 players, 1519.7 grade sum
Heat - 18 players, 1166.0 grade sum
Timberwolves - 16 players, 1077.7 grade sum
Globetrotters - 15 players, 1052.0 grade sum
Worst:
Cavaliers - 10 players, 685.8 grade sum
Raptors - 11 players, 716.5 grade sum
Lakers - 12 players, 752.8 grade sum
Bucks - 12 players, 781.2 grade sum
Hornets - 12 players, 782.3 grade sum
So much for everyone who said the Central was stacked.
Who acquired the the most talented players on average?
Finally, on average, who drafted the most talented players. For this calculation, I just took the total grade sum number above and divided it by number of players to show who extracted the most value for each person they acquired.
Keep in mind when looking at the average grades, this is the scale for players based on the distribution of players in the draft file:
85-100 All-Star Caliber
74-85 Starter Caliber
67-74 Rotation Player
57-67 Replacement Level
0-57 Below Replacement
Best:
Knicks - 75.7 average grade
Spurs - 75.0 average grade
Clippers - 74.4 average grade
SuperSonics - 73.9 average grade
Rockets - 73.8 average grade
Worst:
Kings - 58.8 average grade
Lakers - 62.7 average grade
Nuggets - 63.3 average grade
Heat - 64.8 average grade
Bucks - 65.1 average grade
In summary, I think there is a pretty clear group of winners and losers from this year's creation draft. Rockets, Clippers, Knicks, Hawks, Spurs, SuperSonics all consistently rated well and the preseason results reflect that. Teams like the Warriors, Hornets, Lakers, etc. did not and the preseason also reflects that.
Footnote: Here is the full chart with the data from the pivot I used for the second half of the article.
I've broken down my method a couple of times in 4.0 but I'm constantly updating it...so as a 30k foot overview, the Big BoardTM takes each players alphabetic grades and converts those values into numerical values based on each grade range's midpoint in the software.
