This year was not a particularly strong FA class and it does not look to continue to be a particularly strong FA group as we move forward into Days 2-5 of the signing period. But there is some value left to be found here if you dig for it. Here I highlight some of the value plays I think everyone should keep an eye on.
Why the fuck aren't you maxing this guy (if you aren't already set at his position)?
Kenny Smith, PG Chicago Bulls
Per 36: 13.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 11.1 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.3 bpg, 1.8 topg, .477/.443/.945
1.193 pts/tsa, 13.8 WS
Top 4 in WS/48 among point guards that got starter's minutes at the position next season. Having this guy puts you among the top half of playoff teams at a crucial position. If you don't have one then this is the best way to get one. And if you worry about the scoring volume just pop him in an outside focused offense and watch those numbers grow with continued great efficiency.
Veteran deals that could win you a title:
Vlade Divac, C Harlem Globetrotters
Per 36: 23.9 ppg, 12.2 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.1 spg, 1.3 bpg, 1.4 topg, .560/.267/.730
1.215 pts/tsa, 14.2 WS
How has this guy not gotten a bigger long-term deal yet for someone over the past couple years of one-year renewals with Ward? He could have been a foundational piece and probably still has 3-4 good years left at only 31 years old. He's got a solid all-around game and if you're going to build your offense around the post, this is the second most efficient scorer still on the market.
Dave Lattin, SF Chicago Bulls
Per 36: 22.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.9 spg, 0.5 bpg, 1.0 topg, .531/.228/.771
1.176 pts/tsa, 14.7 WS
An elite wing in this game, Lattin would be easily in the first category if he wasn't 33 years old. He's also a unique wing in that he fits well as a compliment to inside-focused offenses. With Tim needing to retain his solid young PG, a short deal pushing north of 8 figures could lock this stud into your team for several seasons.
Nerlens Noel, C Atlanta Hawks
Per 36: 6.0 ppg, 12.3 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.8 spg, 3.2 bpg, 0.9 topg, .496/.000/.615
1.046 pts/tsa, 6.6 WS
He's not winning you any scoring titles, but if you need an instant injection of defense and rebounding without a huge offensive liability, Nerlens could be your man. He's great for your box score rewards too.
JHB's guaranteed FA steals you should look into getting around mid-level money since he can't afford it this year:
Horace Grant, PF Miami Heat
Per 36: 22.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.4 bpg, 1.5 topg, .507/.000/.891
1.187 pts/tsa, 3.3 WS
He was just a minor rotation piece behind Odin's logjam of really good bigs, but Horace Grant blossomed in his own right in his limited opportunities. While being shielded from overexposure by coming off the bench, Grant still put up really good offensive efficiency numbers while providing volume scoring punch and decent enough rebounding without being a liability anywhere. You'd like more blocks but whatever...nobody blocks that many shots anymore.
Rodney Rogers, PF Miami Heat
Per 36: 30.3 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.1 spg, 0.5 bpg, 2.0 topg, .550/.0295/.690
1.184 pts/tsa, 8.0 WS
Another guy who got buried behind Odin's prodigious duo, this guy can really score the rock. At only 30 years old he could help be a piece for someone to rebuild their team into an inside scoring juggernaut for the next 3-4 years. He hurts you a bit on the boards and isn't a high octane defender so he probably doesn't warrant max or near max money but he could be a good value play if you can cover his deficiencies with strong rebounding and defense from your other bigs.
The Enigma
Pero Antic, C New Orleans Buccaneers
Per 36: 14.5 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 2.8 apg, 0.9 spg, 0.7 bpg, 1.4 topg, .496/.000/.699
1.067 pts/tsa, 4.4 WS
I keep looking at this guy but I can't decide if I like him. His production tells me he has potential and at only 22 years old should have some room to grow with some lab investment. But his grades are terrible and I worry he may turn back into a pumpkin. I also can't decide if he's got too much to improve (jump shot, blocks, inside, strength) to be able to make it all work. If you're in the deep stages of a rebuild, he may be worth an LLE or low money, long-term type deal to see what you can turn him into with some upgrade points.
Dust the cobwebs off these antiques and maybe they'll still look good, but buyer beware:
Livio Jean-Charles, PF Miami Heat
Per 36: 29.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.3 bpg, 1.3 topg, .547/.000/.880
1.224 pts/tsa, 14.2 WS
Steve Stipanovich, C Portland Trail Blazers
Per 36: 23.4 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 0.9 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.0 bpg, 1.8 topg, .555/.000/.854
3.6 WS
Bison Dele, PF Dallas Mavericks
Per 36: 17.3 ppg, 11.1 rpg, 1.2 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.2 bpg, 1.6 topg, .531/.227/.743
1.168 pts/tsa, 8.8 WS
Qyntel Woods, SF Portland Trail Blazers
Per 36: 14.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.0 spg, 1.0 bpg, 0.7 topg, .493/.265/.925
9.8 WS
