For those of us who are dumb can you explain how Stephen Jackson's Win Shares went from 8.8 to 6.8? Guessing it has something to do with him being traded and win shares being relative to the rest of the players on his team?

For those of us who are dumb can you explain how Stephen Jackson's Win Shares went from 8.8 to 6.8? Guessing it has something to do with him being traded and win shares being relative to the rest of the players on his team? Win Shares are always full season measurements. in this case Stephen Jackson didn't have 8.8 locked in and therefore put up -2.0 in the third quarter, if i calculated today what he had generated in the first 60 days it would have been lower than 8.8 too. all players get credit for the minutes they played with the team they played them with. with that said, team defense is applied for the whole season, NOT only those minutes/games the player was with the team. while this hurts a player who leaves a team whose defense promptly collapses without them, it also helps them if they go to a team whose defense promptly becomes superb with them so it evens out in the end (if the player was the actual cause). as it happens the Jazz defense did get worse (113.7 DRtg on day 60 to 115.5 on day 90) which also contributed to why Jay Williams (who was not traded) went "backwards" from 9.9 to 8.7 WS. there are other team-based effects such as the rate of baskets assisted which determines the marginal value of an assist, but you get the idea. there are ALSO league-based effects, specifically the overall efficiency, points per game, and pace of the league. for example if you shoot 50% in a 45% average league, win shares likes that way more than if you shoot 50% in a 49% average league, so even a player who stays the same can see their in-season win shares drop if the rest of the league catches up to them in the intervening period. |

Kyrie leads the way and deserves the MVP but only two non-Kareem bigs can beat NVE's 14.7. This perhaps leads to voter confusion with worse-than-first teamers, Willis Reed is a massive snub for the first-in-the-league top-of-the-pops Bulls and Simi has an argument too.
