PRO Finals MVP - 19 of the 20 winners eligible to be are in the Hall of Fame
PRO two All-Defensive Teams and three rings
.
CON the two and three thing isn't as good as it sounds: players who can exceed both include HOFers Shaq, Rodman, Havlicek, Pippen, Kareem, Kobe, and Duncan, but also non HOFers like Horace Grant, Bruce Bowen, Michael Cooper.
CON zero All-NBA Teams - all seven of the HOF have at least seven besides Rodman who has two; the three non-HOF have zero)
CON one All-Star - bizarrely all seven of the HOF also have at least seven of these besides Rodman who also has exactly two; Horace has one and the other two have zero)
CON has never received a vote for MVP, not even a fifth-placer - Shaq Kareem and Duncan all won MVPs plus Kobe stole one, Rodman only got more than one vote in 1992 when he finished #10, Havlicek peaked with a #4 finish in 1972, Scottie a #3 in 1994; Cooper received one vote twice, Bowen and Grant zero ever
CON statistically modest resumé - regular season .125 WS/48, even worse .115 in the playoffs
.
He's Horace Grant, let's just get that out of the way now - arguably the third-best player for part of a dynasty who (deservedly) never got many regular season accolades.
If we want to make a case for him, the best case is clearly Dennis Rodman. At that point I think there are two reasonable questions:
Is a Finals MVP worth more than two Defensive Player of the Year awards? (Yes.)
Is it also worth being two championships, two All-NBA teams, and six All-Defensive teams behind? (No.)
Is it furthermore worth not being by far the most prolific rebounder since Wilt Chamberlain? (Still no.)
