On Thursday, the Los Angeles Lakers, "pro" basketball champions, announced that their center Lew Alcindor would henceforth be known as Kareem Abdul Jabbar, which means "generous, powerful servant of Allah."
"I am rejecting the religion that is foreign to my black African culture and embracing one that is part of my racial heritage," Abdul-Jabbar stated. He also explained to fans that he isn't joining the Nation of Islam, whose tenets he rejects, but the Sunni branch of Islam. "The re-election of our nation's first Kenyan Muslim President shows me that America is ready to move into a post-racial era. In 2012 we can finally say that we'll never again have to worry about white supremacists in our federal government," he continued.
When reached for comment, Lakers general manager SPL mumbled "Why doesn't he just have his own prom?"
