inspired by a good read on espn
two comments stood out to me. one by Parker that the Spurs were his team from 2008 to 2015. i recognize he won the Finals MVP in 2007 but even letting the reign start in 2008, surely it couldn't have been that long?
he was certainly not the best player in that whole stretch. by regular season win shares he led only in 2012 and 2013, preceded by Ginobili/Duncan and succeeded by Kawhi (and it was The Big Fundamental that led in 2014 playoff win shares). however, even in the 2014 playoffs Kawhi was only scoring 14 a game and that's not a "my team" kind of line.
by acclamation, Parker won his only all-NBA awards in that span: a third in 2009 and seconds from 2012 to 2014. that's nice, but Duncan won an all-NBA first in 2013.
to me it was still really Duncan's team as late as 2011 even though Parker got a lot of talk as a top point guard that he never really was, and although Kawhi's blossom in the public imagination was late, being the best player starting in the 2013 playoffs should count for something.
.
the second statement was by the author, describing Parker as a sure to be hall of famer.
four rings is a great place to start obviously, but non hofers with that many or more include Horace Grant and Michael Cooper, not exactly slouches.
six all-stars separates him from that pack, but then there's Shawn Kemp with a similar all-NBA record, or Chauncey Billups just behind who also sports the Finals MVP (though he could still get in, if he was a sure-to-be he surely-would-be already)
the company he keeps in the 0 all-NBA first ~4 all-NBA otherwise crowd is similarly borderline distinguished, ranging from late inductees Artis Gilmore and Mitch Richmond to a solid player but no-chancer like Kevin Johnson.
add to all that no college and a very weak international resume: played in only 1 global tournament (the 2012 olympics, did not medal), won only 1 EuroBasket (2013) which is great except Team France without him went on to win bronze in the 2014 World Cup, also notably won silver in the 2000 Olympics before he showed up.
look, all told obviously there's a case to be made for Parker as a hall of famer. Shawn Kemp + rings or Horace Grant + all-NBA teams is a solid resume. perhaps fittingly, i just don't think Parker is a slam dunk.
