Sources around the league were surprised when Vince Carter announced his intention to resign with the Charlotte Hornets at what many assumed to be a discount. After publicly losing faith in their star shooting guard, the Hornets looked to be boxed out of free agency negotiations. Anonymous sources have told us, however, that the only other destination Carter entertained was the champion Indiana Pacers. According to our source, "I told my baby he needed to sign with Indiana. They a winning franchise with a leader that believe in they players. I said, "Vincent, get over to Indiana and make 'em want you. Make 'em sign you baby!"
We can confirm that Carter did travel to Indiana to meet with team executives this off season and even got into some informal scrimmages. We caught up with GM Hebrew II.
"I can't publicly comment on any free agents we brought in and didn't offer. I respect their privacy. I can confirm we worked some shooting guards out. At the end of the day, we felt strongly that Vic, Daniel, and Mo were superior to any of the players we worked out. They've got the Pacer edge. They work hard and it shows in the results on the floor. The only big name players we took a shot at were forwards Al Harringon and Guy Beahm. Both of those guys came in and worked their tails off. Orlando and Dallas are lucky to have players of that caliber."
We caught up with some current Pacers, who all requested to remain anonymous, but all had the same message. Carter was lazy and not a hard worker. They were concerned, and shared their concern with management, that Carter's game would regress once he signed his first big contract. And they weren't wrong, as media reports out of Charlotte are that Vince's outside shot has gotten worse and he has lost a step on the defensive end.
One current Pacer player summed it best, "Look at Terror - he is like a fine wine getting better with age. You see his new inside euro step and the way he's up'd his defensive effort this off season? That's hard work. That's what Vince could never do. He ain't got that blue collar gold swaggah. He just not a fit in the basketball capital of the world."
