West Boston, MA. – A budding sim league star who crashed on the Southern State Parkway in West Boston died after being struck by another vehicle Sunday as he returned to his overturned car.
Wendell Carter Jr., 25, struck the center median and flipped his Mercedes G-Wagon at 4 a.m., Boston Police told the Sim League Gazette.
The basketball star climbed out of his vehicle and was helped by other motorists to the shoulder of the roadway, police said.
As he tried crossing the three-lane highway to return to the vehicle, police said, he was then struck and killed by a passing motorist. A state police investigator said he insisted on returning to retrieve his brand new, personalized Jordan 11’s from the car.
A state police vehicle, which had arrived on the scene, was also struck from behind by an SUV. The officer was hospitalized but is expected to be OK, police said. Police continue to investigate the accident.
Carter was a Center for the Boston Celtics, who has been with the team since being drafted by the organization in the expansion draft. His grandmother told Sim League Gazette she will find it difficult to break the news to Carter’s 3-year-old daughter.
"We have to tell this little baby, this little doll," Yvonne Carter said. "How do we tell this little girl? . . . She keeps saying, 'Where's Daddy? Where's Daddy?' It's not supposed to happen this way."
Wendell Carter Jr was born and raised in Atlanta Georgia and played his college basketball under the great Coach K at Duke. He was drafted in the Inaugural Sim League expansion draft and has obtained moderate success over a 7-year career. Having a down season by most experts, team officials notices a change recently in his play and were looking forward to a turnaround.
“We really saw a change in his attitude these last couple weeks.” GM Ank stated in a text message with the Gazette. “Its going to be hard to get past this, The Boston Celtics entire organization and Fanbase will carry this with us for a long time”
