Vince Carter is at a career crossroad with his free agency upcoming, and reports from insiders close to him are that he's looking for a change in a scenery. A chance to realize his true potential in a city that wants him and playing for a GM that believes in him.
Confirmed reports have GM Muzunga actively shopping Vince Carter and picks for an upgrade at shooting guard. One western conference GM has even told me that Charlotte has described Giannis and Yao as untouchable, while Vince is "very available."
Calling what had been your unquestioned superstar expendable after drafting Giannis and Yao Ming with back to top #1 picks could have gotten GM Muzunga in hot water with Vince, but the player has shown he can be a true professional in the face of unnecessary adversity.
"I'm aware of those rumors. The people of this city love me and I play for the people of this city. Even if I take my talents elsewhere this offseason, I'll always love Charlotte. These people have embraced me and I could never thank them enough for the love they've showed me. As far as management - it's a business and I understand that. All I can say is that I'm hopeful I can bring a championship to the Hive this year. These fans deserve that."
However, Vince's mother, Michelle Carter, did not mince words. "You better believe we are moving on. That small handed, small minded, legume eating gingerman does not talk about my boy like that! Plenty of teams will pay Vincent just as much money and will treat him with the respect he deserves. Vincent will be playing for a new team next season. You can bet on THAT, Muzunga!"
Mrs. Carter's reference, of course, is to the now infamous non bet where Muzunga proved to be utterly spineless in support of Carter. After braggadocios off-the-cuff remarks that he would bet Carter would be within 2 win shares of all-league talent Daniel Taurasi, Muzunga refused all bets that were actually offered. Notoriously loose with his money (see, e.g., recent Shareef O'Neal and Seventh Woods signings, which have been widely lampooned in the league), it is unlikely Muzunga was being a penny pincher. More likely he has lost confidence in Carter. A fact that has not been lost on the star's mother and perhaps Vince himself.
