The passionate fans of Charlotte had their pleas heard on Saturday as Charlotte Hornets general manager Fecta Kepla announced the long-awaited induction of shooting guard Jared Terrell into the famed Hornets Nest, Charlotte's version of the Ring of Honor.
Terrell will join Vince Carter as the second member of the acclaimed group. Carter was inducted immediately after getting passed up by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2003 TMBSL Draft.
"Here in Charlotte, we take great pride in the players who impact this organization in the way that others haven't before," Fecta said at the press conference announcing Terrell's induction. "Jared has been excellent in the community, but most importantly, his contributions on the court are unmatched in Hornets history."
In 164 career contests with Charlotte, Terrell averaged 18.3 points per game while shooting 47.8% from the field.
"We had a real tough decision to make in 2002," said Fecta, referring to the trade that sent Terrell to the Chicago Bulls for Matisse Thybulle and a first-round draft pick. "We were fortunate enough to pick up another Hornets great in Matisse in that deal though, and now with Jared back, it's tough to say things didn't work out perfectly for us."
Terrell, who hasn't found much success outside of Charlotte, has been let go by the Bulls, Grizzlies, and Warriors each of the past three offseasons. Just a few days ago, he signed a minimum contract to return to the place where his TMBSL career began.
"Man, I love it here," said Terrell, who was in attendance at the press conference. "The best years of my life were in college at Rhode Island, and I really loved Canada, and California is such a beautiful place, and there's tons of fun stuff to do in Chicago, but other than that, there's nowhere else I'd rather be."
From the sounds of it, more names could be added to "The Nest" soon.
"This will go down as an historic season in Hornets history," continued Fecta. "All-time greats Zhaire Smith and Andy Phillip returned on team-friendly deals, which just goes to show you how much people love playing here. And of course, R.J. Barrett is still here and he puts us in contention year in and year out."
"I fully expect all of them to have their names cemented in Hornets history eventually. These are truly great players that any team would be glad to have, and we're lucky that they've committed to our organization."
