Dallas Mavericks general manager D. Lap Throws did not mince words with the media following his team's loss in six games to the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the 2004 TMBSL Playoffs.
"Screw this," said a visibly disgruntled Throws following Game 6. "It just doesn't make sense. We had one weakness this season: backup wing. I went out and got a backup wing. I did my job. I just wish everyone else would do the same."
"This team was absolutely stacked at every other position, and after the trade, we were even MORE stacked. There was no team better than us, 1-5. Neon, Harrington, Cam, Killian, and Jon Elmore. Tell me one area on that squad that could be improved at all."
"That's right, you can't."
When a reporter in attendance asked about rumors that had been swirling earlier in the season regarding Throws' desire to upgrade the point guard position, Throws was adamant that the rumors were untrue and he saw no reason to find a new point guard.
"Elmore ran MIN Zaslofsky up and down the court in every one of those games. It wasn't even close. If you ask me, we should've run more of our offense through the point."
Zaslofsky finished the series averaging 27.7 points and 13.8 assists per game, while turning it over 1.7 times per contest. Elmore, by comparison, averaged 17.2, 7.8, and 4.5.
One Western Conference GM who remains in the playoffs was pleased with the Mavericks' early departure from the postseason, citing the strained relationship between the two following trade negotiations earlier in the season.
"I thought we had something worked out," said the GM who asked to remain anonymous. "I offered him an elite point guard-eligible player who is shooting 52% from the field while averaging 22.5 points per game so far in the playoffs. He's averaging 5.8 assists playing SHOOTING GUARD for Pete's sake! And all I wanted was six first round picks."
The Mavericks' title window remains open with Cam Reddish and Killian Tillie hitting their prime and Al Harrington showing tons of room for growth, but Neon Boudeaux will be 34 next season and has to be nearing the end of his elite center days.
As for Elmore, he still has two years and $9 million left on his contract. The Mavericks do not have a first round pick again until 2008 after trading their firsts until then for Boudeaux and Mack.
