The Liga ACB is the top tier Spanish basketball league that is widely regarded as the top professional league outside of the US. It has drawn renewed attention recently with reigning ACB MVP Luka Doncic going 1.3 to the Mavericks in the most recent draft.
So I wondered, what do players look like going between the two?
Pretty surprising stuff for me with the counting stats. I would have guessed rebounds would go down in the more athletic NBA, but they actually improve (very slightly). I also would have guessed fouls would go up since while 5/40 = 6/48, FIBA counts technicals towards the limit and NBA doesn't, but again there's no change.
The scoring percentages are a lot more in line with what I thought going in. Three point percentage comes down because the shots are longer, that's simple. Field goal percentage overall goes WAY down. Unfortunately ACB doesn't have the granular shot tracking we have in the States, but given the lower free throw rate my guess is that it's a lot harder for players to a) get penetration and b) finish after doing so.
.
Okay, so where do these numbers come from? FIBA overhauled their court in 2010, getting rid of the trapezoidal lane and moving the three point line back from the adorable college distance of 20ish feet to a little over 22 feet. This is still short of the men's 23 ft 9 in, but at least it's closer. I therefore looked for any player who had played at least 1000 MP in 2010+ ACB and at least 1000 MP in the NBA and came up with 34, from Álex Abrines to Willy Hernangomez. Then I simply tallied up their stats in each league and get the average results at the top.
It's possible that there are multiple distributions involved here though, that there are some player types that translate more successfully. Here are the top and bottom three PTS/TSA discrepancies for players to play at least 2000 MP in each league, with FG/3P/FT 3PR/FTR listed for each league.
Raul Neto 44/30/73 on 26/31 to 44/39/75 on 36/17
Raulzinho hasn't done much in either league. His route to increased efficiency is pretty simple: take more threes, convert them at a much higher percentage. He also seems to be driving way less though, which probably contributes to his low assist totals, which is probably why he's stuck deep on Utah's bench.
Joe Ingles 48/37/73 on 52/39 to 45/42/76 on 64/12
Another Jazzer, oddly, Ingles was already taking a lot of threes before coming over, but he nudged the rate up a little more and like Neto converted them at a higher clip, but had a similar precipitous decline in free throw rate. Unlike Neto his passing has become much stronger, going from a putrid 3.2:2.9 ratio to a very solid 4.3:2.1. His improvement is all the more remarkable given how old he was by the time he made it to the NBA (26), although to be fair in between Granada and Salt Lake City he spent a year in Tel Aviv with coaching wunderkind David Blatt.
Tomas Satoransky 49/38/78 on 30/32 to 49/41/76 on 26/24
Tomas was the first non-American non-Spaniard to win the ACB's Most Spectacular Player award (not the MVP), so he's got that going for him. His NBA efficiency is actually lower than ACB, which is pretty shocking considering his change is the third *best*. Like Ingles, his passing went from a calamitous for a point guard 5.0:3.0 to a very nice 5.8:1.8. His NBA shooting stats are also trending very strongly upward after a dismal rookie year, so he may yet join the Utah men as increasers.
Looking at the three the commonalities I see are:
-lower volume types. Not completely defense minded but not star scorers either.
-good shooters. All three are at or near 40% from NBA three.
-good passers. None of them are Chris Paul or anything but they're not black holes.
.
Sergio Rodriguez 46/38/85 on 41/26 to 41/34/74 on 36/16
El Chacho is the rare player to go ACB to NBA back to ACB back to NBA. Like Satoransky he won Most Spectacular, unlike Satoransky he also won Europe Player of the Year (twice), All-ACB team (three times), and a Euroleague MVP for good measure... and he STUUUNK in the NBA. The free throw line is the same distance in every league in the world and he somehow lost 10 points off his average. It's baffling. He got regular time in Portland followed by spot time in Sacramento and New York (which I can see bringing anyone's average down), then got a ton of time in Philly and his FT% was a stiff 67%. He was only 31 in his second NBA stint so it's not like he aged out.
Andres Nocioni 50/47/80 on 49/29 to 43/37/80 on 35/27
Sorry Mike. What makes this especially concerning to my eyes is the years in this sample are after Nocioni went *back* to the ACB, not the early 2000s when he was an enormous star (winning MVP in 2004). From the splits above obviously he was still a pretty big star in his post-NBA years but you get what I mean, the man was 33 and just kept getting older. Nocioni was a pretty bad passer in the NBA 1.8:2.2 but was truly execrable in his second ACB stint at 1.4:2.6. At least he didn't forget how to shoot free throws.
Gustavo Ayon 65/00/64 on 00/32 to 54/00/50 on 00/25
Ayon played a couple minutes with ACB before his NBA time which is mostly remarkable for the horrible trades he was involved in, including being traded straight up for Ryan Anderson. He's the only player in the 34 sample to not make a single three in ACB play, and along with the great Joel Freeland the only ones not to make a single three in NBA play.
The similarities are less clear here with Ayon in the mix, but the parallels with the first two are clear. Star players have a lot of trouble making the jump, and go right back to being really good in the foreign league. To be clear, 43/37/80 is nothing to sneeze at from Nocioni, and he had himself a decent little career, never really an established starter but never too deep on the bench either. People expecting 20 a night on Steph Curry level splits would have been sorely disappointed, is all I'm saying.
