It was a relatively quiet trade 2004 trade deadline as only one deal actually finalized. The Charlotte Hornets sent Jon Pierce to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Marvin Bagley III and a 2009 first round draft pick.
Not so fast, my friends.
Sources have confirmed that the TMBSL league offices are indeed reviewing the trade due to suspected negligence on the part of the Charlotte Hornets, as well as foul play on the part of Pierce.
"This was such a god awful deal for Charlotte," the source said. "I have to believe that (Hornets GM Fecta) Kepla owed something to (Anne D.) Luck as a follow-up to a previous transaction or something. It really just doesn't make any sense from their perspective."
Commissioner D. Ruce Dickinson said he is engaging in talks with league officials to determine if the Hornets are actively attempting to alienate their fan base in an effort to gain approval for relocation.
Kepla entered deadline week with a clear asking price -- future first round picks and expiring contracts -- for the veteran big man who had been vocal with multiple local and national news outlets about his displeasure with the Hornets front office and coaching staff, as well as the city of Charlotte itself.
"I didn't come here to play for a team that would finish behind multiple teams who don't even have a front office," said an angry Pierce before he was sent to Phoenix. "If I wasn't already 35 years old, you can bet your *** I would've sat the last couple of months on the bench. I hate being here."
Pierce's public statements are believed to have handcuffed the Hornets in any trade talks and may be in violation of TMBSLPA bylaws.
In return, the Hornets receive Bagley, a big man who has disappointed in every possible way since he was a first round creation draft pick. Bagley was somehow able to leverage that awful play into a two-year contract with Phoenix that paid him a combined $26,562,500.
The signing was criticized around the league the moment it happened. Many believed it could have been the deal that crippled Phoenix considering the holes they still needed to fill on their roster around young stars Hakeem Olajuwon and Max Zaslofsky.
But no, Charlotte was happy to take on the vomit-inducing Bagley contract.
And yes, that means he will still be a Hornet next season.
Without the expiring Pierce deal, the Hornets clear approximately $18 million in cap room this offseason, but they'll have a tough decision to make with regards to Brad Daugherty, another player whose career has been derailed by the maligned Hornets coaching staff and who may want out as soon as possible.
Had the Hornets held on to Pierce and his $13,000,000 contract, they would have had room for two max contracts in an offseason that may be seeing names such as Harry Gallatin, Jake Shuttlesworth, Deng Adel, Len Bias, Jesus Shuttlesworth, Gary Bossert, Tyler Blevins, Mikal Bridges, Jeff Hornacek, and Benji Hammon all hit the open market.
Rumors are that the Hornets plan to use what cap room they have to bring back fan favorites Austin Wiley and Drazen Petrovic.
As for the Suns? They'll be near the soft salary cap of $50,000,000 this offseason with intentions to move the aging Butch McRae to open up max salary cap space.
Who could possibly want a 32-year-old wing on the downside of his career who will be owed $63,000,000 over the next three years?
Fecta, I think your phone is ringing.
