Oh my goodness, it's time. Friends, here is "Souvenirs". t.co/7G0TDUcqOv
This song is a reflection on the time I spent in Jakarta and what it has since come to mean to me.
(If you haven't read about my 100 days in Jakarta yet, now would be a great time to get the backstory: t.co/UIEB77j0WF )
Just wrote about the story behind the mug from the "Souvenirs" music video and would love to share: #InsideSouvenirs
A lot of people have asked me about the mug from the "Souvenirs" music video--did I make it, where did I buy it, how did I get the idea to use a mug to set story in the first place? Truth is, this mug is a lot more to me than just a helpful story-telling tool.
The night of my Jakarta show, I received this mug as a homemade gift from a fan at the meet and greet, mere hours before officials showed up at the venue and our whole saga began. The mug shows a plane flying from Los Angeles (my home) to Jakarta, and the distance between these two places (8,836 miles).
Of all the gifts I've received in all my years of touring around the world, to receive a mug like this at that particular show, on that particular night, in that particular country, sometimes feels too bizarre for me to wrap my head around. During my time there, the mug was a constant physical reminder of just how far away from home we were. At times it almost felt mocking. "Hey Kina. In case you forgot, you're 8,836 miles away from home."
Los Angeles and Jakarta are marked by two little red hearts on the mug. At first, I'm sure that second heart felt pretty ill-fitting to me. We were lost and scared and I couldn't help but feel like my heart, my life, my everything, was back home in Los Angeles. But at some point that changed, and I realized that my life wasn't back in Los Angeles happening without me, but, for now, it was here in Jakarta, and it was up to me not to let it be wasted. Once this shift happened, everything began to feel a bit more precious.
This mug is now one of a few cherished keepsakes from those 100 days, reminding me of that chapter and all the lessons I learned. And now those 8,836 miles seem important, too. Perhaps being that far away from home is what it took to put things in perspective, to really know what it was I held dear, and let all the other stuff fall away.
thanks to the internet, i just reconnected with the lovely human that gave me the mug at the Jakarta show. thank you, @veraciu ❤️

“Birdsong” is here! It’s a song about loss and love and hope and letting go and I’m so excited to finally share her with the world. Hope you find something in it for yourself ♡ youtu.be/8WZEPtN8_f0

My new song “History” is nostalgic to me in a million different ways. Somehow each line carries multiple memories from my past. I tried my best to feel them all in this video—IT FELT LIKE A LOT. (But in the best way.)
If you missed it: bit.ly/2NbhV4t
Trying my best these days to hold it all, both the light and the heavy parts, and not get stuck in it. Trying to plant my feet firmly in right now and give the moment that is actually happening all of my energy. (As it turns out that is very hard and I have a long ways to go.)
