The Dallas Mavericks are in the hunt for an upgrade at point guard and sources indicate that they are willing to pay a high price to acquire one.
"Last season they reached into the bargain bin for an upgrade," the source said. "They hoped they could be sneaky in acquiring (Jordan) McLaughlin. This year, they're done playing around. They want that home run acquisition."
The Mavericks sent defensive specialist big man Christ Koumadje to Harlem last year, along with backup point guard Austin Luke, in exchange for McLaughlin. McLaughlin hasn't played a minute this year after being replaced in the starting lineup by Jon Elmore, a journeyman who has spent the last five seasons with five different teams.
Elmore hasn't been the solution either, shooting under 45% from the field while averaging nearly four turnovers per game.
Mavericks general manager D. Lap has reportedly inquired about a number of different options, including Benji Hammon in Atlanta and Jalen Brunson in Sacramento.
Hammon wouldn't do much to help in the turnovers department, but would certainly increase the team's efficiency while providing a veteran presence in the locker room.
"People who worry about turnovers are missing the forest for the trees," said disgraced Hawks GM James Beard. "Benji's got another 10 years in him easily. He tells me during every one of our mandatory post-game sauna sessions."
In a somewhat controversial move, Kings GM Billy King reportedly attended the Hawks vs. Mavericks game on Day 49 in an effort to interfere with any trade talks occurring between the two teams. Desperate to move Jalen Brunson, who he resigned just months ago, King allegedly burst into the GM booth where Lap and Beard were having discussions during halftime.
"BRUNSON'S ON A GREAT DEAL. HE'S ELITE. HE HAS A GREAT PTS/TSA!" King shouted in front of multiple observers, while Lap, taking the professional approach, notified arena security and asked them to escort King from the premises. "THIS IS WHY YOUR TEAMS NEVER TAKE THE FINAL STEP! ENJOY WASTING YOUR WINDOW! I'VE GOTTEN SO MANY OFFERS FROM OTHER GM'S! THE BEST OFFERS! I'M NOT AN IDIOT!"
The Sacramento Kings organization would not provide comment on the trade rumors or King's outburst.
