The league was caught off guard this past week when the Bulls and Globetrotters pulled off a mini blockbuster three months before the trade deadline.
Ward, GMing the struggling Globetrotters put out some feelers in attempt to acquire some assets for the relatively young, but aging Jock “Thunder from Down Under” Landale while he rebuilds his roster. All NBA insiders including Mark Stein and the internationally connected Fran Franschilla believed the Knicks were the heavy favorite to land him with their abundance of future picks, but they forgot to take into account that Ward fucking hates Eric and will never, ever make a deal with him. Which might not be entirely true, but also this below quote is pretty damning and shows a clear bias.
“Willing to listen to all non-Knick offers.”
You can't look at this quote and think anything other than Ward hates Eric.
With the Knicks off the table many thought the trade market would die down, but the Australian-obessed TimPig came in with an offer that simply couldn’t be ignored. TimPig had wings to spare and was hoping to open up playing time for future star Antwan Jamison at the 3. In hopes of doing this he offered Dazon Ingram, currently averaging 23 points per game, a first round pick and some scrubs to make the money work.
Now, I don't know if it was the Eric hate or if Ward actually believed that this offer was better but league sources tell me that Ward did not hestitate to pull the trigger and the deal was made within minutes.
Now that we know the logistics, we need to look at if this trade actually matters, and who won the trade.
Does the trade matter? Probably not. Ward is in process of a long rebuild and adding a 25 above average probably doesnt help him by the time that rebuild is in a place where they are winning games.
There is no doubt that this trade improves the Bulls' front court, but probably not enough to make them a contender this year. If this was Jock of 2002 and he was still playing at an elite level then this might have been the piece to take them to the promised land, but instead it just gives the bulls an inflated contract for a player who was the 12th best center in the league last year in terms of win shares.
A lot of people are wondering, since the Globetrotters aren't going to be a contender anytime soon, why did they pass on offer from Eric that would net them four firsts and future cash considerations?
I don't know if there is a good answer to that, but there are plenty of people on the other side of that argument as well who think that Ward made the right decision.
I think JHB really articulated his thoughts clearly and concisely in a text message he sent to the Charlotte Observer:
“Ward picked the better offer,” he simply stated.
Magic GM Skrouse also provided his thoughts to the Observer: “Team Ward on this one.”
With reasoning like that, it's hard to argue.
