Jalen Brunson came into the league adamant that he was a shooting guard.
"Point guards have to do too much," said the Villanova product prior to the Creation Draft. "Give me the ball and let me shoot. That's it."
That wasn't good enough for Sacramento Kings general manager Billy King, however, who reportedly promised Brunson before the Draft that he'd be the team's shooting guard of the future before reversing course and forcing Brunson to be the team's primary ball handler.
"(King) threatened to trade me to San Antonio, or even worse, Charlotte, if I didn't agree to play point guard," remembered Brunson with a tremor in his voice. "I said 'GIVE ME THAT BALL' and immediately went to the gym to work on my quickness."
"That's literally exactly what happened," agreed King during a preseason shootaround at Garmin Fieldhouse in Sacramento.
It looked like Brunson may have finally gotten what he wanted with the addition of R.J. Cole - a natural point guard - to the team's roster this offseason, but now King has made it clear he wants to trade who he describes as "literally an OP point guard."
The asking price is unclear at this point but early indications are that interest is slim.
"Lol, elite" said one GM who asked to remain anonymous but was sure to add that his team was in desperate need of a point guard.
In other Kings-related news, it's rumored that GM Billy King may be on his way out of town. Sources report that he was seen exiting Brooks Hall on the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown last week with a resume in hand. A quick search of the department website indicates there is an opening for a Mapping Technician internship that starts at $8.75 per hour. Geography has long been known to be King's true passion.
