A few notes before we begin.

-I'm moving from four updates to three. Day 90 vs day 120 doesn't seem worthwhile. Instead I will do day 30, day 70, day 120.

-I actually started this last year to deal with Leonard Leslie, but any player who has played a minute in previous sim league seasons is no longer eligible for the rookie ladder regardless of what their player page says.

-I'm also moving to a .44 * FTA modifier instead of .555 for true shot attempts. The empirically determined value I found for 5.0 was .434 and I don't think the increased precision by using the tiny deviation from the IRL value is worth explaining to people. This changes the league average from 1.05 to 1.08 and also slightly rearranges players so that those who take a disproportionately higher number of FTAs per FGAs will look slightly better than they used to.

-Don't worry about it.

preseason

.

1. Stromile Swift C

This class in general looks stronger overall than previous years, but so far it also looks like there are more players with strengths and weaknesses instead of being just okay across the board. Legendary member of Druce's 4.0 title winning Trailblazer core Stromile Swift is the former. Right about the best efficiency in class, nearly the best rebounder, elite bleal numbers. The only weakness is a turnover issue that's unlikely to be solved naturally, but since it's only 2, he's a pretty easy #1.

2. Ricardo Strong SF

Ricardo might be a software guy who's getting deleted. If he sticks around, he's got real nice efficiency and defensive numbers but the turnovers are a scooch too high and the boards are disgusting. Strengths and weaknesses.

3. Mike Miller SG

As expected Miller is filling it up and not getting too bent out of shape about defense. Another player with a little too much turning it over, Miller adds a surprising strength of rebounding and takes the #3 slot.

.

4. DeeAndre Hulett SF



DeeAndre suffers from the cursed C Outside with some Three Point Shooting, but he still put up a respectable percentage even playing at SF. Playing at his natural (and only allowed) position should bump the boards up nicely too. There's a big gap between The Big Measureable and Miller Time.

5. Marcus Fizer PF



A worse version of Stromile across the board. That that's still good enough for #5 shows how good Stromile is looking.

6. Nathan Wootten PG



I'm pretty sure this player is also getting deleted but he'd be a great prospect if not. Turnovers are the big concern but they grow well for point guards, d/r numbers are okay, and as his three pointer grew to match his jumper you could expect "WOOT there it is!" blaring from every Utah boombox Honda Accord.

7. Ken Nielsen PG



Another maybe deleted player. Man heavyreign was putting in WORK and it's all for naught. Nielsen is more of an all rounder type, not bad at anything, not great at anything.

8. Livio Jean-Charles PF



The much maligned French striker looked to silence critics with solid efficiency in front of goal, but an utter lack of tracking back or minding the transition game is sure to leave many unsatisfied. Surprised by showing great poise on the ball, was very difficult to dispossess, which could allow him to add hold up play to his game.

9. Hedo Turkoglu PF



Pretty close to Mike Miller in stats, the big difference being that Hiyadet was playing PF so the boards aren't as legit and he can't play SG. And he turned it over another half time per 36. Other than that they're neck and neck.

10. Jaquay Wells SF



Not in love with anyone for the ten spot, but I did think it was worth pointing out that a player with "Strength: 3pt Shot" didn't end up with the dreaded low jumper high three combo. The spread sheet estimates him at 91 jumper 35 three, which is definitely workable. Jaquay himself is overall more of a third or fourth wing type, and without SG eligibility that's not really gonna work.

1. Stromile Swift C - LR #1



It's a wild ladder this year except for by far and away the #1 rookie. By far and away the best d/r numbers in the class and in the conversation for best in the whole league, and he's got very good scoring efficiency. I never thought I'd say this but in a few years Steph Templeton just might have competition for best two way big in the league.

2. Marcus Fizer PF - LR #5



Two through six are a toss up, and two of them weren't even on the ladder in preseason. It's going to be a wild year, don't get too antsy or too cocky or too any-other-animal-y. (Frankly we've had enough carping in this series to last a lifetime anyway.) Marcus Fizer is not shooting 57% from the field for the year. We have lots of guys who don't take jumpers, even the great Udoka A+zubuike hasn't managed it. With that said The Big Pharmaceutical will probably end up being a plus scorer, he's already giving you very good rebounds, and the bleals are looking good. Cutting down on his turnovers since preseason helps a lot.

3. Ken Nielsen PG - LR #7



I'm still pretty sure Nielsen was supposed to be deleted but here we are. The only player besides Stromile to put up plus scoring in preseason and the regular. The rest of his build remains underwhelming but this game has always been, and will always be, about software.

4. Brian Cardinal PF - LR unranked



The Custodian has arrived to clean up the former Dump. (GM Dump was in charge of the Celtics in 4.0.) Numbers have improved across the board from preseason: less turnovers, more rebounds, more bleals, and much better efficiency. Has a lot of room to give back and still be a plus scorer.

5. Khalid El-Amin PG - LR unranked



El-Amin butts his way into the conversation by padding out his scoring efficiency, getting it just above the water line. His already tasty ast:tov and rebs have become pleasantly plump as well. You'd still like him to bring more bleals to the table but the plate is pretty full.

6. DeeAndre Hulett C - LR #4



Rebounds haven't seen as big a bump as hoped for going from SF to C, but the scoring is still solid and in a somewhat slippery class the low turnovers really stand out. It may be because Cleveland is a wasteland, or it may be because their roster is barren, but a big putting up 37 minutes a game is a good sign too.

7. Darius Miles SF - LR unranked



Would be a lot higher if he was SG eligible, but restricted to SF he's not as appealing. Scoring is only average now and will probably come down. Solid d/r package and while handling isn't a strength it isn't a glaring weakness either.

8. Desmond Mason SF - LR unranked



Mason saw a surge in efficiency and his volume plummet, which is a really odd mix and suggests the efficiency is a mirage. But he's definitely SG eligible and everything beside his scoring is very tantalizing. Reminds me of a young Herb Jones, although he's only one year younger so that might not be much of a compliment.

9. DerMarr Johnson SG - LR unranked



Aside from the turnovers he's got a real shout at the #2 spot. But the turnovers, woof. While Handling doesn't grow quite as well for SG as PG, there is reason to believe he can get them down to 2 flat per 36, which is a lot more manageable.

10. Quentin Richardson SG - LR unranked



Efficiency is good. Rebounds are okay. Turnovers are a little too high, bleals are way too low. Ian's gonna get this guy on an MLE every offseason.

Efficiency dropped off a little, opening the door for HAHAHAHAHAHA yeah right. Dramatically better than most players, let alone rookies. Guess Druce wanted a Seattle Supersonics banner to put next to his Portland Trailblazers one.

2. Marcus Fizer PF - LR #2



Fizer remains a really nice scorer / rebounder type. Kind of a David Lee, who for the record is a greater player than Karl Malone. Count the ringzzz. Or just ring, I guess, singular.

3. Ken Nielsen PG - LR #3



Kenny and Khalid are neck on neck rolls for top PG prospect for the regular season, but the Nielsen ratings are way higher in preseason. Have fun with that, Guggle SEO. I also like Kenneth's defensive package a lot more: way more bleals and C+ is miles ahead of C-. (Or as the Oregowanians say, "kilometres".)

4. Kenyon Martin PF - LR unranked



Don't call it a blue light special, K-MART is BACK baby!! I'm gonna be honest with his putrid jump shooting I wouldn't be shocked if he falls right back off the ladder, but aside from a mild turnover problem he's solid elsewhere so you never know.

5. Khalid El-Amin PG - LR #5



Don't worry about the 3P%, Khalid's a plus scorer. Clearly sublime handles, really solid rebounds from a point guard (where he has been set on the DC). You'd like more defense but hey, the world needs Knicksminners too.

6. DeeAndre Hulett C - LR #6



Blocks are probably too low to grow into anything significant, but the rebounds should get sewn up in TC, and he remains a real nice scorer though the 3P% is obviously comingdown.

7. Desmond Mason SF - LR #8



The Big Pepper Spray's only elite skill is handling, which is in general not in high demand at the small forward position. But he pairs that with absolutely no weaknesses anywhere else. If nothing else he'll be an elite third wing in the league given his SG eligibility. Some solid scoring TCs could push him into elite starter territory.

8. Quentin Richardson SG - LR #10



By comparison, Q-Upper-Middle-Class-Well-We're-Well-Off gives you an elite scoring package and then everything else is a question mark. Too many turnovers, not enough rebounds, nowhere near enough defense. This is doubly unfortunate since there are plenty of GMs who will only look at the buckets and max, and the rest of his portfolio is unlikely to accrue sufficient interest for that to be worthwhile.

9. DerMarr Johnson SG - LR #9



The Big Johnson gives you more of a complete package but those turnovers, yikes. They're not enough to render him unplayable, but they've got to be keeping yawn up nights. Maybe that's why he's yawning.

10. Mark Karcher SF - LR unranked



I've been wanting to put Karcher on for awhile. His efficiency is comical, but with comically dreadful volume and middling preseason it's probably not real. Still, he's giving you micro turnovers, macro rebounds, and has SG eligibility. You could do a lot worse. You could have drafted Courtney Alexander

1. Stromile Swift C - LR #1



This ended up being a lot closer than I thought it would due to Swift's stats dropping across the board. He's great out of the gate, not much for stamina though. I think the true efficiency level is a little above league average due to his preseason, and while there are lots of better scorers in this class nobody can touch the bleals, so I stuck with him. Before you criticize him, why don't you walk stromile in his shoes, huh?

2. Kenyon Martin PF - LR #4



The Blue Light Special really picked up the scoring late. Given his poor preseason and FT% it's probably a bit of a mirage, but along with the really solid d/r numbers he gave Swift a real run for his money for #1.

3. Ken Nielsen PG - LR #3



Two more players who were very hard to separate. Nielsen gives you good scoring, okay rebounds, great handles, and okay bleals. If it was just regular season I'd have made him #4, but neither player put together enough regular season MP to totally ignore the preseason advantage.

4. Khalid El-Amin PG - LR #5



This Husky can ball. Sublime scoring and handles, rebounds are a big strength, but the defense is an outright weakness. Pair that with a less impressive preseason and it was easy to go Ken-Khalid. They're definitely both plus prospects and they're close enough that I wouldn't be shocked by either being superior down the road.

5. DeeAndre Hulett C - LR #6



El-Amin's comrade in massive measureables probably doesn't have star potential given how low his blocks and rebounds are starting, but average TC growth should take him into solid starter territory. In real life the three point shooting would be sensational, in sim life since it won't grow it's more of a novelty item and any improvement in efficiency will have to come via the lab.

6. Marcus Fizer PF - LR #2



Fizer scores and rebounds, and does enough in the other categories to get by. His blocks are high enough that natural TC growth could get him to the 2 range, which would be very nice.

7. Jake Tsakalidis C - LR unranked



Jake the Tsnake is a carbon copy of Fizer - just slightly worse across the board. Volume is fungible and playing in the Riverwalk wasteland is absolutely juicing his numbers, but it's probable some of that 11 pts/36 advantage is legit. Not all or even most, but some.

8. Alex Schmidt PG - LR unranked



After an intriguing preseason Schmiddtty got a lab infusion that pushed his scoring to league average levels. He's mostly kept up the very frisky bleals but unfortunately also the very concerning turnovers. This gives him a higher ceiling than most PGs since handling grows well for them and blocks don't, but with 25 already spent on him the ceiling lowers considerably.

9. Quentin Richardson SG - LR #8



He can score and he doesn't turn it over too much.

10. Mark Karcher SF - LR #10



At minimum he should be a great glue guy - great rebounds, microscopic turnovers, great scoring efficiency on low volume. If he can hit on some defense or scoring camps, there could be an actual player here.

Courtney Alexander - can't score, rebound, or handle. defense is okay. woof
DerMarr Johnson - really like the scoring and rebounding for SG, but with iffy defense the horrible handling is a dealbreaker
Desmond Mason - is not that far from the ladder. exceptional d/r package, but scores too much with the poor efficiency.
Darius Miles - not terrible at anything, not good at anything. there are worse places to be
Mike Miller - like here for instance, not good at anything and very poor handling.
Hedo Turkoglu - a slightly better version of Mike Miller
Livio Jean-Charles - DeeAndre Hulett without the defense. what defense? exactly
Jamal Crawford - okay rebounder for PG. more turnovers than rebounds. yikes
Jason Hart - great rebounder for PG. also turns it over way too much and can't score. would be a special teams star if that was a thing in basketball
Chris Mihm - real nice d/r numbers. also turns it over twice per 36 and can't score.
