Tony Gonzalez 6'5" 250 SF 22
California
Tony Gonzalez was both a football and basketball player for his three years at California. Focusing mostly on football, Tony finally got a chance to shine in his final NCAA tournament. Cal player Ed Gray, who was the Pac-10 player of the year, and second in the nation at scoring 24.8 points per game suffered a season-ending broken foot. No one else on the team averaged more than 12.6 points. Enter backup Tony Gonzalez.
He was a key player in Cal's 1st round victory over Princeton bruising his way to 5 unlikely points in the final minute to win a tied game. In the next round Tony outplayed future TMBSL legend Tim Thomas, to score 23 points en route to another upset victory for Cal. The next game the Bears led #1 seed North Carolina by 7 points within 5 minutes, but two nobodies named Antawn Jamison and Vince Carter were able to barely eek out a victory for the Tar Heels.
A bit of a mystery to scouts given his limited basketball experience, no one doubts Tony's athletic abilities. Extremely strong for his position, with good leaping ability, he has the potential to one day take the league by storm. However, right now that is mostly just potential. He lacks finesse inside, and has an underwhelming jump shot. He has never attempted a 3 pointer. His defense is below average, lacking both the knowledge and the quickness to effectively defend perimeter players.
