Lets contract GMs in a league where we *checks notes* are struggling for GMs?

C'mon man, if you can't see how this looks bad you're kidding yourself One GM apparently reached out regarding Nash while Fecta was in Thailand. Not on me that he didn't follow up. Another GM has stated he reached out regarding a different player (also while Fecta would have been in Thailand), and then didn't bother to follow up after not receiving a response to his first message. Not on me that he didn't follow up. Everyone has Fecta's phone number. It's publicly listed on the board. I have yet to hear of a GM who reached out to him via text to propose a trade. No one reached to me via text about Nash when I was gone. When Tim reached out I was back. CONSPIRACY.

Got to thinking about this again after some GMs made splashes in free agency and stole some important players and then didn't set DCs. While I think the GM minimum requirements initially outlined are a bit stringent, I think what we're seeing from last offseason is pretty crappy.
While we don't want to discourage new GMs from joining and being able to participate right away, it's pretty shitty when they show up, overpay a few guys, and then don't even set a depth chart.
There has to be some kind of medium here, right? Any ideas?

There has to be some kind of medium here, right? Any ideas? There absolutely is. Back in the day when we had a waiting list there was a contract system where if you didnt make the playoffs in 5 years you were fired, I'm not sure it ever came to that but it certainly encouraged activity. With all these new additions the problem is you never really know who is going to stick or not, and as we've seen last offseason they're making some good signings but then not setting a DC and generally not doing a whole lot. It definitely takes a bit to learn the league and how things work, but there need to be checks and balances in place. A tier system of warnings, etc. could be the right move. Example: Tier 1 - 1 year of the following: STERN Warning from eric, give league your cell number Tier 2 - 2 years of the following: Contraction
1. No Depth Chart 2. Holding up the draft for more than 24 hours without notice 3. No FA Bids

Maybe we should a mentorship program where each new GM is assigned a 'buddy' experienced GM that will give them tips on what to do when certian parts of the year come up and can also answer questions by PM

I'm not a huge fan of firing folks who don't make the playoffs for five seasons on its surface, but considering where we're at, it's probably not an unreasonable requirement. I guess it depends if we feel we're better off keeping the KNs of the league around or not.
The other requirements seem fine to me, but I'm not sure it alleviates a situation where a Sidney Moncrief or Jerry West get stolen by a GM who disappears. We can do contraction drafts and all that, but losing a player, even for a season or two before said team might get contracted, can really throw off a team's plan.
For example, I don't think there's a good way for us to know where Moncrief would be today had DCDavo not sent a 4-year max for him, but let's say he'd have gone back to Portland. Let's also say the Pacers get contracted in two seasons. Majic still got screwed in this situation because we can't just return Moncrief to him after two seasons. Even if we could, two seasons is a long time and can have a pretty huge impact on how a team is built.

After a while, it's on the GM to take some ownership and there's no way a mentor could force that.

we are not going to do five season no playoff firings, especially since that has nothing to do with the matter at hand and both the lakers and pacers are making the playoffs anyway
there is no way to determine whether a GM who sends bids for the first time will stay or not, so there's no reason to put limits on what they can bid
we don't need to reinvent the wheel because a 5 Win Share player last year is riding the pine

That 5 win share player was also first team all-league and by saying we're re-inventing the wheel due to a "5 win share player riding the pine" is ignoring Jerry West who was an 8.4 win share player and Draymond Green, who is actually starting, as a 6.2 win share player, not to mention the Pacers having four former top-5 picks on their roster.

For future reference, do we ignore the 7.3 win shares he had the year before when he ranked 4th among shooting guards and the 8 the year before that when he ranked 3rd? Julius Erving had 8 last year and Rik Smits had 7.3 the year before that. Does a single below-average year make him a scrub? Just curious at what point and at what quantity of win shares this would matter.
