Last year Russell Westbrook beat Jerry Stackhouse's record for worst 3P% with at least 2021 attempts. The season ended looking like this: .266 2020 Charles Barkley .308 2995 Russell Westbrook .309 3202 Jerry Stackhouse .313 3383 Allen Iverson .317 3570 Gary Payton .320 3931 Vernon Maxwell .320 4159 Baron Davis .325 4264 Antoine Walker .329 5546 Kobe Bryant .347 6330 Jamal Crawford .395 6486 Reggie Miller .400 7429 Ray Allen Russ only needed to go 67 of 207 this year (32%) to get above the wear a track suit over your suit suit to beat the bejesus out of Kirk Snyder mark, yes the whole thing, yes every time. He has started the year 17 of 75 (23%) (!!!) If he takes the 335 more threes he's on track to, he now needs to make 112 of them (33%) to not break Stack's "record". (Contrary to expectations he probably won't have enough attempts to catch Iverson this year.) At halftime tonight he's 0-2 . At what point do we have to consider that Russell Westbrook is intentionally trying to be the worst three point shooter of all time?

In a feat of remarkable consistency, since the OP Westbrook has shot 17 of 70, a crisp 24% that brings his season three point percentage UP to a cool 23.4%. With only 62 attempts left between him and Stackhouse's 3202, he needs to make 33 - that would be 53%. He has a projected 215 remaining so it's not unimaginable he takes 243 and reaches Iverson's 3383. If he does, he will need to have made 104 along the way to best The Other Inexcusable MVP of the 21st Century, or 43%. Even reverting to his career average of low 30s won't be near enough, and he's shown no signs of being able to do so anyway. You've got to hand it to Sam Presti, everyone knew Westbrook was in decline and on a massively bloated contract but he was still able to flip him for evergreen Chris Paul. Light years ahead.

Westbrook has been scorching hot recently, going a cool 9 of 26 - that's 35% and almost league average, folks! If he can keep that up over the projected 113 attempts he has left this year, he'll end the season at only 1004 makes of 3289 attempts, well shy of Iverson's attempts but also well shy of his pct at 30.5%. To even avoid catching Gary Payton he'd have to make 128 out of 281 next year, or 46%, and again that's with league average shooting for the next two months. After the fait agglovepli it's not entirely unimaginable for him to shoot better than Vernon Maxwell though: with 642 attempts to work with he only needs to "swish" 254, which is 40%. I wouldn't bet a nickel on it happening, but Jason Kidd managed a few 40% seasons at the end of his career, it's not impossible for Westbrook to get there.
