Hello everyone,
Tonight on the podcast we got into discussing the future of Sim league and where we go from here. I dont think its a shock to say that it seems the league is on life support at the moment after the rash of GM's "retiring" this last weekend.
I believe that we currently have a strong core group of GMs that would like to keep things going in some form.
We discussed a few options on the podcast and thought we would start a thread discussion to talk things through.
Here were a couple of the options:
1) Contraction using this software. We would re-distrubute the current players on roughly half the league teams and set the other rosters to 25 attribute players. This would act as a form of contraction.
2) putting all of the active teams/GMs in one conference
3) Using the new software, which allows real contraction, and building out a new league. SPL plans to buy the software tonight to start looking into this.
I think it would be best to add your opinions on all of these 3 options and please suggest something additional.

I like the idea of option 3 and new software, and I'd be OK with either trying to copy current rosters over there in some way or starting from scratch. However, this would require someone to commit to being commissioner, and based on history, it seems like it wears people out pretty quickly.
The idea of a little bit more mystery behind attributes and team building is very appealing to me, but it sounds like there are features in the new software that the majority of folks wouldn't necessarily want to deal with. For a couple, particularly regarding htm outputs, eric suggested he could macro them. I know that's something he likes doing and gets enjoyment out of it, but I also think it'd be unfair to expect it of him.
I'd also be fine doing our own form of "contraction" in this software and seeing how that works for a little while.

I'll go with/learn any way that'd grant keeping the league alive. Count me in for w/e.

I have bought the new software but not had a chance to play around with it to see if settings could be eliminated to make it simplified to where we have it. I would imagine there has to be options within the game to play with and without xyz feature.
My concern is our numbers, they keep going down. We need to find a way to bump them up again. If we keep losing members like we are, eventually we won’t have a league and I am rather enjoying it this time around much more for some reason.

I’m out if we switch to the new software I hate it It was discussed last night that if we did make the switch, we wouldn’t want to start over. So if it was too much for Eric, I would take it upon myself to remake the teams from the old software to the new. May I ask what you hated about the new version?

Another idea is we run a test version on the new software. I would just need someone’s help in putting it together.

I am rather enjoying it this time around much more for some reason. I bet it's because of the unweighted lotto. And eric changed THAT too.

I'm glad you asked. Everything. Constructive. I'm not trying to offer constructive criticisms to improve it. I hate everything about that software, there is a reason the version of TMBSL that used it lasted one season and there have been 50+ sim seasons across two iterations of sim league in the old software since. It's over-complicated, the html outputs are terrible, and I won't do it. The only decent feature it has is contraction.

The new software sucks. Here comes BK with the idea to save the league with massive intreague: Move all of the remaining GMs (and the teams that are likely to have a GM come back/or are really good) into a full conference of 15 teams. Move our 2nd teams into the 14 team conference. Now we have a skeletal system that just needs some fun rules and we have promotion/relegation in the NBA

Or move everyone into the Central and Midwest so that more participating GMs can make the playoffs.

here's what i recommend doing after the playoffs.
1) all GMs in the Eastern Conference. GMs who have a team in each conference can pick which roster/picks/etc. situation they keep, and it'll have whichever name is Eastern appropriate.
2) dispersal waiver of the remaining rosters - like regular waivers, teams only have to have hard cap space to take on the contract. i think two 12 hour waiver periods is plenty for this.
3) any remaining players put into the FA pool for the following FA period.
4) all Western Conference teams populated by all 25 scrubs of the form Robot ####. all future picks owed by those teams will be voided and some form of compensatory draft picks assigned. all future picks made by those teams will be Robots. Robots are ineligible for Eastern Conference play.
5) this gives us 15 GM slots, and we currently have 15 counting ward and pete. if we get to 16, we randomly assign Eastern Conference GMs to two squads and make one squad the Atlantic and one squad the Midwest, doing the same to the Western Conference.

I really want to remember Robot #425791's heroic FG to take home the Robot Conference Title

What about the draft with those western conference teams and isn’t the AI going to submit FA bids?

re: team names
I think it's better all else being equal for the league to have eastern teams in the Eastern Conference for the same reason we don't allow joke team names and joke players. I recognize that some people might not want to use eastern names, so let's go down the list, reiterating that these will only be the names, and GMs with two teams will be free to pick which roster situation they want:
majic - boston celtics ward - harlem globetrotters spl - new york knicks ianboyd - miami heat skrouse - orlando magic kn88 - washington bullets andrewluck - toronto raptors
jhb - atlanta hawks h7t - carolina cougars fecta - charlotte hornets timpig - chicago bulls bill - cleveland cavaliers delap - detroit pistons mike - indiana pacers pete - ???
these aren't final, just for illustration.
we can also let people choose a new eastern name entirely. available choices are: milwaukee bucks philadelphia 76ers brooklyn/new jersey nets buffalo braves syracuse nationals cincinnati/rochester royals kentucky colonels pittsburgh condors virginia squires
this gives us a firm longitudinal divide between milwaukee/chicago and memphis/st. louis. let me know what you think

Tim, you've never used the software.
I forgive you that you don't yet realize that it is up there with genocide and Nashville country music among the worst things to ever happen in the history of the world.

I see no logical reason I can't be the Mavs and be in the Central. They are in the Central timezone.
