I know everyone was on pins and needles awaiting this and it is finally here!
Draft Grades:
1. The Hornets went into the draft needing everything and anything. Vince looks promising, but everyone else on the roster is not great Bob. So they had the advantage of not needing to focus on need, but just taking the best player available, which unfortunately there was no clear player here. The Freak out of Greece was sitting there oozing with potential and size, but a considerable project. Victor Olidipo looks like a high floor prospect who could really become elite if he become PG eligible, but thats a big if and a risk in itself. Other options that scouts were talking about were CJ McCollum, Rudy Gobert and Ben Mclemore.
At the end of the day the Hornets opted to go big or go home and the take the player with HOF potential in Giannis. This is in no way a sure fire pick, but one that makes sense with their current roster construction,
Fecta’s Grade: B.
2. The Nuggets went into the draft feeling pretty good about their wing situation but needing a lot of help in the frontcourt and at the PG position. Unfortunately for them there was no sure fire stars at either of those positions and I believe that affected the value they got from this draft slot as they drafted on need. If they were going to go PG they could have gone Olidipo and hoped he became PG elgibile or they could have reached for a promising, but unknown non-profile player in Isaiah Cannan. If they wanted to go front court they were looking at defensive specialists Rudy Gobert or Nerlens Noel who both look like high floor defensive guys with a lot of questions about how much their offense will ever develop. They also could have looked at a promising offensive player like Kelly Olynk.
Ultimately they went with a high floor defender in Rudy Gobert. I think this is a safe pick, but when I am picking in the top 5 I want a player with superstar potential and I dont think Gobert has that. I would have went with Oldipo and prayed he became PG eligible.
Fecta’s Grade: B-
3. Once the Pacers traded up to this slot there was no question they were going after Dipo. Im not here to grade trades, so I will ignore Heebs giving up his future for a player who is not a sure thing. But still, I like dipo a lot and the Pacers organization has shown that it develops players very well so it’s a great fit.
Fecta’s Grade: B+
4. The Celtics had a lot of needs and really could have gone any direction and ultimately decided to go PG...which makes sense but they took Dennis Schroder a PG with very medicore/bad starting grades and a write up that also has a lot of question marks.
Fecta’s Grade: D+
5. Taco loves having picks in this range and this time he lucked out with argubably the safest scorer in the draft falling his way in Shabbaz Muhammed. Starting with A- inside and a write up that looks promising he could be really good with some TC love and points put into his jumper. He might have the highest floor of any player in the lotto, and looking back maybe someone the Hornets should have looked at at 1.
Fecta’s Grade: A-
6. The Lakers have Len Bias...and thats pretty much it ( its not a bad thing to have) so they had a lot of flexibility to draft who they thought was the BPA. At this point I would have been thinking long and hard about CJ McCollum who looks like a sure thing as a scorer. The Lakers must have been scared off by his size and defensive question marks though as instead they went with the taller Otto Porter. Porter looks ok, has decent starting grades and probably has a high floor, but im not sure how high is ceiling is and thats why i would have went with CJ.
Fecta’s Grade: B-
7. A non-profile guy coming off the board at 7 is surprising, but for a team needing a PG I like the Issiah pick and think he has a lot of upside with that starting grade set. Without a profile we arent sure how those are grades are made up, but they are intriguing nonetheless.
Fecta’s Grade: B+
8. The Spurs have needs all across the board as well so they had the luxury of taking the BPA and I think they nailed that with CJ McCollum. This dude will be able to score right away and if he ever becomes PG eligible...WOO.
Fecta’s Grade: A
9. The Sonic’s have a solid backcourt foundation, but everywhere else needs a lot of love and insiders all believed they were going to look to add to the frontcourt and thats exactly what they did. They went with a defensive stalwart in Nerlens Noel who even in the worst case scenario should have a long career as a third big focusing on defense.
Fecta’s Grade: B
10. The Heat also have a lot of needs but were intent on finding their floor general of the future here and went with Ray McCallum Jr who has a good starting grade set and seems like a safe pick. He will probably never be an all star, but if you can get a 6 win PG at 10 that is not a bad pick at all.
Fecta’s Grade: B
11. The Bucks have Ayton, but other than that...a lot of needs and they added a player who was in the conversation for 1 overall at 11! That's always going to be a win. McClemore is an outstanding athlete with a good shot and that's always a recipe I like.
Fecta’s grade:A
12. The Cavs have a bunch of ok players at every position but no one that is irrreplaceable. They took advantage of this by taking what I considered the BPA with Kelly Olynk. His offensive write up looks very, very good but he will be a defensive liabilty. Still, at 12 he is a great pick with great upside.
Fecta’s grade: A
13. The Pistons are very mediocre and they continued that tradition with a very mediocre draft pick in Robert Covington. Everything about him seem MEH. C+ scoring grades, B potential. MEH.
Fecta’s Grade:C
14. IRL Anthony Bennett is a fat piece of trash. Sim Bennett...looks really promising. His write talks about his scoring ability, strength and sneak shooty prowess. Those are all great things for a big in 5.0 and I think he fell just because of the IRL stank on his name. As others have proved, IRL is not the end all be all and I think the Wizards got a great prospect at 14.
Fecta’s grade: A-
15. It looks like the Cavs decided to focus on defense with this pick and took Jamal Frankling a limited offensive player who will be a great defender from day 1. This goes against my boom or bust strategy, but I get it to some extent.
Fecta’s grade: C+
